JoeMerrelJanuary 6 to 31 – Joe Merrell’s ‘I am the ____.’
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Inspired and informed by readings in environmental philosophy, 19th-century science fiction, and legends of the Algonquin windigo, Merrell’s work explores the notion of the natural, physical world as a metaphorical map of human consciousness. This exhibition – installed throughout the IAO space – features animation, 3d projection, print, sculpture, as well as two custom scents.

Special thanks to IFF for their support of this program.

Presenting a weekend of workshops, talks and experiments designed with one thing in mind: Re-envisioning how we classify and talk about scent. To kick off the weekend, Caro Verbeek returns with her Odorama series, featuring talks about experimental approaches to preserving and describing aromatic heritage. With Peter de Cupere, Kate McLean, Cecilia Bembibre, Laura Speed, with a performance by Han van der Vegt with Klara Ravat.

COMMUNICATING SCENT : WEEKEND
ScentMap
Sat., January 20 + Sun., January 21 Scent and Communication Hackathon

At Mediamatic, Amsterdam
Special thanks to IFF for their support of this program.

Presenting a weekend of workshops, talks and experiments designed with one thing in mind: Re-envisioning how we classify and talk about scent.  In this two day “hackathon”, invited attendees will explore, dismantle, and propose potential new scent classification systems, in self-directed groups. No taxonomy is safe!
Time: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, both days
Cost: Free, by invitation only

Figs were a symbol of blessing and prosperity in the ancient world, a symbol of sexuality and modesty in the Renaissance, and make a heckuva lovely perfume ingredient, today. Ashley Eden Kessler teaches the fig accord in a hands-on blending class.

Open_Sess_2017Wed., January 31 – Open Session
Blend with (new) friends!
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Choose five materials and blend your own perfume formulas in a fun, informal, knowledge-share environment. The basics of perfumery, without pretension. Participants are expected to dive in and learn by trying. Everyone leaves with their five materials, and a small spray vial of their best trial.

Time: 5:00 to 8:00 pm
Level: Beginner, intermediate and advanced students are welcome
Cost: $45.00 – First timers // $8.50 – Returning Students

Notes: Returning students are invited to come at 4pm. Don’t forget to bring your vials. Extra vials cost between $3.50 and $5.00 per vial.

JoeM_CalThu., February 1 – Joe Merrell Artist Talk and Walk-Through
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Join artist Joe Merrell and IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown in an informal talk about Joe’s wide-ranging curiosities, including contemporary art, hollow earth theories, science fiction, cryptozoology, and mythical beasts. We will also smell the scents created for the show.

For first-timers, only!
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Join Saskia Wilson-Brown for a special guided blending session for first-timers only, where you will learn how perfume works (and make your own blends) in a casual, friendly, social setting. Everyone leaves with a 4ml vial of their new scent, a formula, and a great understanding of the basics of perfumery.
Time: 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Level: Beginners Only
Cost: $60 (materials included)

LuxepackWed., February 7 – Talk: “Historical Scents for Wellness”
LuxePack, Los Angeles, Barker Hangar, Santa Monica
A hands-on workshop exploring historical materials used in wellness, beauty, and healing, exploring a selection of historical materials for the group to smell, as well as facilitate a group blending exercise. Or, as LuxePack puts it: “A truly added value event for innovators looking to magnify their brands/products with olfaction elements.”

Shal_TypeSat., February 10 – Four Hour Accords: Shalimar-Type
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Students will spend several hours as a group training their noses, as Ashley leads a thorough study of the molecular components of Shalimar-type perfumes. Then, as a class, we will dive into a deconstruction/DNA analysis of the Shalimar formula, covering the materials, facets and proportions of this classic scent.

at Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles
Join us for an introduction to perfumery in a workshop at Los Angeles’ incomparable Craft and Folk Art Museum. As a class, we’ll smell a selection of materials, explore the cultural value of perfumery, and spend time blending our own individual perfumes. Each participant leaves with five vials of raw materials, and a small spray bottle of their new scent.

Don’t let this little flower’s innocent face fool you. Muguet was once the banner under which unsupervised youths could “mingle”, and was adopted by the French Socialist movement as their official flower for May Day. But… ok: it’s also just super pretty. Learn about the aromatic structure of muguet, in our latest accords class.

From February 24 to March 17, Los Angeles based artist Terry Braunstein takes over the project space, exhibiting an installation of small collages, sculptural assemblages, found images and juxtapositions inspired by scent.

IAO returns to SxSW for a panel exploring the science of scent, new trends and uses of scent technology and how scent will play an increasingly important role in our 21st century lives and next-generation technology experiences.
