SxswAugust 5 – 25 – SxSW PanelPicker
Technology and smell need your vote
There comes a time every year where everyone asks everyone else to vote for their panel at SxSW’s PanelPicker. And here we are. A panel featuring Luca Turin, Jacki Morie and IAO’s Saskia Wilson-Brown is up for voting. It’s called “Binding Emotion & Memory: Science, Story & Scent”, and it explores “how scent will play an increasingly important role in our 21st century lives and next-generation technology experiences.”

AUGUST 2017: EVENTS + CLASSES

SINTESIS2Wed., August 23 – Síntesis @ IAO
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
In town for their concert at the Ford Theatre with Dayren Santamaria, Síntesis – “Cuba’s great Afro-Cuban progressive rock group” – is collaborating with the IAO to start developing a set of scents in honor of their 40 year anniversary. Síntesis is among the most avant-garde Cuban music ensembles and has become an icon of Cuban contemporary music.

ARTOPIA2Sat., August 26: LA Weekly’s Artopia, with dublab
at Union Station, Los Angeles
LA Weekly’s fifth annual art party, Artopia, is a celebration of the vibrant arts and culture scene in Los Angeles. For the second year in a row, internet radio network and DJ collective dublab curates the sights and sounds, and the IAO joins to support and collaborate with our old friends at dublab with some very special aromatic games.
Time: 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Notes: This event is hosted by LA Weekly and dublab. This is not an IAO-managed event.

SEPTEMBER

11weekTue., September 5 11-Week Materials Course: Autumn Session
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Ashley Eden Kessler leads eleven weekly sessions (over the course of twelve weeks) exploring the crucial materials in the perfumers’ organ: An indispensable first step in practicing perfumery and an opportunity to grow a technical familiarity with the materials. This is module one of a total of three yearly modules. Each student will receive a take-home vial of each material covered.
Time: 6:00pm to 8:30pm, tuesdays
Level: All levels of experience are welcome
Cost: $475.00 (materials included)
Notes: Limited to 10 sign ups. This class meets every tuesday starting September 5 through November 21 (no class on Tuesday Oct 31)

DropletTue., September 5 – #Droplet by Marcos Lutyens
at La Monnaie de Paris
#Droplet will take the form of a projection-mapped sound piece in a public square at La Monnaie de Paris. This piece – 25 minutes long – will explore the progress of man’s impact on the environment in and around Paris through sound, visuals and scent. Four aromatic compositions by Charlotte Vellard will be disseminated during the performance, imprinted onto letterpress printed scent cards, designed by Micah Hahn

For first-timers only!
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Join Saskia Wilson-Brown for a special guided blending session for first-timers only, where you will learn how perfume works (and make your own blends) in a casual, friendly, social setting. Everyone leaves with a 4ml vial of their new scent, a formula, and a great understanding of the basics of perfumery.
Time: 6:00pm – 9:00pm

at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Join Ashley Eden Kessler in an intermediate level blending and evaluation class, where experienced students will expand their technical capacities and understanding of perfume blending. Class meets for four Mondays in October: Oct 9, Oct 16, Oct 23, Oct 30.
Time: 6:00pm to 8:30pm
Level: Must have attended at least one 10 week materials class, or a minimum of three accord classes, or five open sessions.

Learn the art of formulating with natural essences and discover best practices to utilize when blending. Jessica Hannah leads a class on perfume structures, plant origins, and the historical context of materials. Students will learn by blending and re-blending formulas, while increasing olfactory recognition.
