The IAO hosts artist Miles Regis in a month-long residency, which will take the form of private study, focusing on the materials and technologies surrounding scent creation and dispersal, an ongoing exhibition, and an artist talk.

We’re teaming up with Airbnb to host a series of olfactory explorations of L.A.’s underworld history: Learn about the city’s most notorious characters and most insalubrious tragedies, and use your new knowledge to create your own noir-inspired scent.

Join Saskia Wilson-Brown for a special guided blending session for first-timers only, where you will learn how perfume works (and make your own blends) in a casual, friendly, social setting. Everyone leaves with a 4ml vial of their new scent, a formula, and a great understanding of the basics of perfumery.

Neck_PheromonesThu 07/06 – Human Pheromones—The Emperor’s New Clothes?
Part 2 of a two-part workshop
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
After exploring the manifold ways that the human armpit ignites the imagination, each participant will receive a sample spray vial of six different commercially available pheromone products (one of which will be a placebo). Over the course of the next two weeks, each participant will test out the various pheromones by wearing them at work, at home, and at play, observing and collecting experiential data for our next meeting. During phase two of the workshop we will share and discuss our observations, and Susan will reveal which samples contain which pheromones (or the absence of them).
Time: 7:30pm to 9:30pm

The IAO presents a special four-week materials course, exploring important aromatic materials in perfumery, evaluating materials in combination, and blending exercises. The course is led by independent perfumer and educator Ashley Eden Kessler.
Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm, tuesdays
Level: All levels of experience are welcome
Cost: $200.00
Notes: This class meets every tuesday starting July 11, ending August 1st. Class is limited to ten participants. If the class sells out, we will add a monday session.

SeanRaspetThur 07/13 – Creative Flavoring with Sean Raspet
at The Institute for Art and Olfaction
In this three hour session led by artist and experimental flavorist Sean Raspet, you will learn how flavors work — and how to work creatively with flavoring. This hands-on session will focus on synthetic or artificial flavor molecules, materials which create possibilities for new flavors beyond what already exist in nature. We will taste plenty of molecules, and leave with a new-found appreciation of the creative potential for flavoring, as well as technical knowledge about how to work with one of our most vital senses: Taste.
