On December 10, 2015, join us for our second event: A paranormal story-telling session, and an invitation to participate in our self-guided car tour of LA’s aromatic hauntings.
Drawing from Ghost Hunters of Urban LA’s extensive research into haunted Los Angeles, Phantosmia is a self-guided tour of the city’s famous and not-so-famous haunts – notable for their paranormal disturbances uniquely driven by scent.
From Peg Entwistle’s sweet gardenia perfume floating inexplicably around the Hollywood sign to the phantom smell of Rudolph Valentino’s horse lingering at the former site of Falcon’s Lair, these ghost smells are sensorial reminders of the lurid, turbulent and baroque history of this City of Angels; where dreamers come to be reborn and – just as often – die terrible, lonely, violent and often painful deaths.
We hosted a kick-off party for this project on October 3rd, where we shared ghost stories with GHOULA’s founder Richard Carradine. Members of the Smelly Vials Perfume Club – IAO’s own in-house punk rock perfume-making society – were on hand to explain the scents and the project. Due to popular demand, we are hosting a second event: A story-telling session on December 10.
STORY-TELLING SESSION: DECEMBER 10
Join us on December 10th for a second event related to the PHANTOSMIA project: A ghost-story telling session. Share real Los Angeles ghost stories with GHOULA’s founder Richard Carradine, and meet the members of the Smelly Vials Perfume Club – IAO’s own in-house punk rock perfume-making society. Come prepared with a story or two, or just hang back and soak in the ectoplasm.*
You have the option to pre-purchase a kit of thirteen haunted scent samples in 3ml spray vials. The kit includes a limited-edition printed guide with a map to each location, history of the space and a collection of stories related to the hauntings – all this designed by Micah Hahn at Allies.la and printed on the finest newsprint LA can offer. (cost: $60.00- quantities are very limited!)
You have the option to pre-purchase the map, as well: A beautiful limited-edition fold out map – on its own – without the scents but with a button or two (supplies allowing) will cost you a cool $5.00. Easy, and worth every penny.
Once you have your kit, we invite you to take off in private cars, carpool, or float over to each location to experience the space . You can use your scent kit to get a sense of the hauntings, or perhaps experience an actual ghost smell or two!
Hey, this is LA, and sometimes dreams do come true. Someone should have told poor old Peg…
*actual ectoplasm not included

Each kit contains:
– Thirteen ghostly scents created by The Smelly Vials Perfume Club in 3ml spray bottles (one for each stop on the self-guided tour), including Jean Harlow’s perfume, Rudolph Valentino’s Horse Stable, Miguel Leonis’ soap, and more.
– A beautiful fold-out map to the locations, complete with related stories, designed by Micah Hahn at Autumn Seventy.
– A set of limited-edition buttons (for the fashionable ghost-hunter)
– Charcoal for rubbings
– Scent strips
As part of the project, guests are invited to visit each location on their own, experience the space with their haunted smells and collect a rubbing from the Phantosmia marker hidden nearby. Guests who visit all thirteen sites (and have the rubbings to prove it!) will be invited to a special blending session at the IAO, where they will be able to explore their own olfactory version of ghostly LA.
Due to USPS regulations we are not able to ship kits – they are available for pick-up only, and can be obtained at our story-telling session on Dec 10, or by special arrangement.
