ABOUT

During these turbulent times we are being asked to engage in unfamiliar ways of living. For many of us that includes the privilege of staying home to save lives. However, for Angelenos who are finding themselves facing the compounded crises of homelessness, a lack of access to the tools of hygiene, and little capacity for social distancing, this presents a particularly challenging time. The same goes for those amongst us who are serving these at-risk populations.

#CleanHandsLA is an initiative to collect and distribute FDA and WHO-compliant sanitizing products that can potentially help mitigate spread where other methods are not available.

We aim to distribute this small aspect of safety to those that do not have a place to call home, or those who might have to put their lives in danger by helping others.

We are pleased to have teamed up with IFF, Inc., to donate hand sanitizer to Los Angeles’ to organizations who are serving LA’s most vulnerable populations, including:

My Friend’s Place: myfriendsplace.org
Food Forward: foodforward.org
And others.

BUT FIRST: MINIMIZING SPREAD

There is an urgent need for awareness about how to minimize spread.

This is what is recommended by the WHO:

+ Frequent hand washing
+ Reduce face touching
+ Cover your cough with a bent elbow or a tissue
+ Avoid crowded places
+ Stay at home if you feel unwell
+ If you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, seek medical care (but call first)
+ Keep an eye on the latest information from WHO (and in the US, the CDC)

HOW TO HELP

SUPPORT EFFORTS IN THE COMMUNITY

If you have a little extra money to give, please consider donating to these organizations:

+ Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières
+ WHO Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund
+ My Friend’s Place
+ Food Forward

IF YOU WANT MAKE FDA COMPLIANT SANITIZER

We all have to act responsibly, so before you do anything, please download the World Health Organization’s guide to local production, and read the FDA’s temporary guidelines.

+ DOWNLOAD GUIDE (opens PDF in new window)
+ READ FDA GUIDELINES (opens PDF in new window)

Please remember that sanitizer does not cure the virus. Also note that the WHO does not recommend fragrant products in the sanitizers.

IAO’s Hand Sanitizer Formula

We are only sharing this as a guide. Please consult the FDA and WHO guides referenced above, and make the formula that works with the alcohol or ethanol that you have on hand.

We were unable to obtain 96% Ethanol, so for the time being we are using our denatured perfumers’ alcohol – which contains 92.3% ethanol.

85% – EtOH (ethanol) 92.3%
4.17% – hydrogen peroxide 3%
1.45% – glycerol
9.38% – distilled water

Note that per item III on the revised FDA GUIDELINES (click to download PDF), it is required to denature any spirits that are not otherwise denatured using denatonium benzoate (patented as Bitrex).

IF YOU WANT TO DONATE

We are accepting donations of the following materials:
+ Soap
+ Face masks
+ Gloves
+ Bulk sanitizer, made in accordance with WHO formula and FDA guidelines
+ Other supplies that could enhance safety for vulnerable populations

If you have any of this to give, please email us at hello@artandolfaction.com and we will arrange pickup or delivery!

Food Forward
Food Forward fights hunger and prevents food waste by rescuing fresh, surplus produce, connecting this abundance with people in need and inspiring others to do the same. Fruits and vegetables are collected from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets, and the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Terminal. 100% of the recovered produce is donated to hunger relief agencies across eight counties in Southern California. The organization has won four consecutive Food Recovery Challenge awards from the U.S. EPA (2015-18) for its work to prevent and reduce food waste.

East Side Riders Bike Club
The East Side Riders Bike Club (ESRBC) is an all-volunteer, grassroots bicycle club founded in 2008. The purpose of the ESRBC is to prevent youth from joining gangs and/or taking drugs, but also engage youth who have a desire to enrich the community through recreational activities, specifically focusing on bicycle riding. Youth have been introduced to bike safety, healthy eating, active living, the importance of giving back to the community, and are able to participate in community riding events hosted by ESR.
