In this class, Anna digs into the history and science of odorants. The history of perfumes is strongly intertwined with the progress of science and medicine. Odorants have been often used as medicaments: indeed, they are made of multiple chemicals compounds which — along with their smell — may cause possible effects on our body, some even noxious and allergenic effects. In this class we will discuss the difference between a pharmaceutical compound and a cosmetic one, regulatory updates for perfume production and safety issues. We’ll explore the truths and myths as well as the history and production of odorants in perfumery, science, and medicine. Join us for a facts-based class that provides an overview of functional odorants – busting a few myths along the way.

This online talk is presented as part of The Science of Smell series, a collaboration between the Institute for Art and Olfaction and Anna D’Errico.
