SUMMARY:Scent in Culture: Seduction @ PRS Library (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/scent-in-culture-a-3-part-lecture-series-with-saskia-wilson-brown-tickets-1980281597566?utm_experiment=test_share_listing&aff=ebdsshios \n– \nThis is an external event managed and produced by Philosophical Research Society. \nSaskia Wilson-Brown presents a three part lecture series at the Philosophical Research Society Library\, demonstrating the impact of perfumery on human creative and cultural expression\, and drawing from her research into global historical scent practices as well as from esoteric teachings\, metaphysical texts\, and occult traditions represented in the PRS collections. The series reflects ongoing inquiries within the library’s holdings into ritual\, embodiment\, desire\, symbolism\, and the unseen forces that shape human experience. This research forms the basis of her upcoming book The Cultures of Perfume (D.A.P.\, Autumn 2026). \nPresenting richly textured anecdotes interwoven with historical research\, these talks will further root the topic in both contemporary and historic olfactory culture through direct experience of aromatic materials and perfumes. The lectures will last approximately 45 minutes and will be followed by ample time for questions\, discussion\, smelling\, and story sharing. \nImage: Detail from Coat of Arms with a Skull\, Albrecht Dürer (1503)

SUMMARY:Olfactory Provocation: On Scent and Currency (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olfactory-provocation-on-scent-and-currency-online-tickets-1980740579393?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nMaxwell Williams joins us in the first talk in our new Olfactory Provocation series\, which aims to present new\, original\, and provocative ideas in a series of short format talks. \nEvery day\, large quantities of money are illegally moved across borders. The American government is developing devices to decode scent–but its signatures remain intentionally unknown to the public. In this talk\, perfumer Maxwell Williams explores how the government’s nose might impact our personal lives\, while also sharing observations about the scent of currency across borders. Do we love the smell of money primarily as a metaphor for capitalistic “success\,” or is it something deeper? And why do some people seem to smell like cold\, hard cash? \n\n\n  \n\nABOUT OLFACTORY PROVOCATIONS \nThe Olfactory Provocations series from the Institute for Art and Olfaction aims to present new\, original\, and thought-provoking perspectives in a series of short format lectures. In each talk\, you can expect to discover an unexpected idea presented by a thinker and practitioner in the scent community. We offer this series with the belief that being exposed to and discussing new ideas is important\, whether you agree with them or not. With that said\, the views and opinions presented in the Olfactory Provocations series do not reflect the opinions or the IAO or its employees.
