SUMMARY:The Margins of Good Taste: Perfume and its Producers in Ancient Greece (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-margins-of-good-taste-perfume-and-its-producers-in-ancient-greece-tickets-1992158985152?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nSean Coughlin presents research into attitudes and positions towards perfumery in the Ancient Greek world. Ancient perfumery in the Greek world wasn’t a Greek practice\, or at least according to many in power it was not supposed to be. It was something done by women\, enslaved workers\, foreigners\, and migrants — people the literary record either erases or moralizes about. This talk reads the sources for the practitioners rather than the moralists\, and asks what we learn about a craft economy whose expertise sat with people the elite considered suspect. \nThe presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with attendees. \nOlfactory Research Notes is a lecture series presented by the Institute for Art and Olfaction that highlights important research done in the field of olfaction\, directly from the scientists\, researchers\, academics\, and artists who do it. \n– \nImage credits: George E. SUMMARY:Scent + Spirituality: Pagan Practices\, with Lakenda Wallace (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/scent-spirituality-pagan-practices-with-lakenda-wallace-online-tickets-1997980692034?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nAs Samhain\, commonly known as Halloween\, approaches\, perfumer Lakenda Wallace presents an overview to the many ways in which scent is used in pagan spiritual practices. In this online talk\, Lakenda shares a multicultural appreciation of scent\, discussing using incense for cleansing\, aromatic plants used for setting boundaries\, inviting in love\, or strengthening your manifestations. She will touch on both the individual botanical materials as well as techniques and strategies for blending and using scents in a multifaith approach\, exploring the role of scent in Greek\, Norse\, Celtic and Yoruban spiritual practices. What scent softens Zeus? What is the best offering for Hecate or Loki? Does Odin even like scent? Recipes\, spells\, and divine practices for your magical practices await. \n

SUMMARY:Balancing Act: Grave Matters (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/balancing-act-grave-matters-in-person-tickets-1999421155499?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\nMake one strange scent worthy of the Halloween season\, using a Jean Carles approach to perfume composition\, in person with Daniel Krasofski. \n\n\n\n\nDaniel Krasofski presents Balancing Act: Grave Matters an interpretive class exploring a Jean Carles approach to perfume composition by making one strange scent worthy of the Halloween season. \nThis Halloween-season edition of Balancing Act invites participants to create a perfume around one unusual and evocative idea: dirt – which is more atmospheric than traditionally “pretty.” Following the familiar Balancing Act format\, we will work through a softened\, interpretive approach to the Jean Carles method\, using proportion\, comparison\, and repeated trials to understand how a composition takes shape. Rather than trying to make every spooky scent at once\, a reliable way to summon chaos\, we will focus deeply on one accord and observe how individual materials affect its texture\, balance\, mood\, and recognizability. We will explore how an earthy\, metallic\, mineral\, animalic\, or decaying impression can become compelling\, nuanced\, and perhaps even unexpectedly beautiful. Participants will leave with a structured set of trials and an original fragrance sketch: proof that sometimes the monster under the bed simply needs better proportions.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Perfume Blending: Structured (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-perfume-blending-structured-in-person-tickets-1999424634906?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nJoin us for a structured approach to perfume blending. This class is designed for newcomers and beginners of the craft as an onboarding to working with scent at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nIn this class\, Minetta Rogers will introduce you to the foundational terminology and techniques of perfumery as we guide you through the steps of working with aromatic materials in our labspace. The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials. The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. At the end of class\, you’ll take home 5 aromatic materials\, a final spray vial of your own formulated blend\, and perfume-making knowledge!

SUMMARY:Tea and Olfaction: Deconstructing Taiwanese Oolong (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1998934683448?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\nJoin us for an aromatic exploration of Taiwanese oolongs\, bridging the disciplines of specialty tea tasting and experimental scent design. \n\n\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. We will then explore together how to strategically augment and modify this baseline formula using specific aromamolecules to match the distinct profiles of the two teas we evaluated. \nThe specialty oolongs featured in this class are generously provided by Tap Twice Tea (https://taptwicetea.com/ ) \n
