Scent strips will be handed out by your friendly Institute for Art and Olfaction team\, and we will spend time smelling and discussing our impressions of aromatic materials associated with sweet treats and spooky tricks.\n\n\n\nWe will start the second portion of the session by briefly discussing blending scent\, and your individual Halloween-related scent concept. Each student will have the opportunity to blend with aromatic materials previously selected as well as those more closely fitting to their seasonal concept. We will spend the rest of the session experimenting with our own short formulas. Perfume-lovers and burgeoning olfactory artists have the opportunity to jump right into making their scent dreams a reality\, with access to the hundreds of aromatic materials in the IAO lab space. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer to the world of aromatic materials: synthetics vs. naturals\, top/middle/base notes\, and dilutions. Participants will be guided through the process of setting up a workstation and how to write a perfume formula\, with proportions and balance in mind. \nThe second portion of the class will be the open exploration of the IAO Organ by all participants. After making individual selections\, we will get to blending! With Julianne Lee guiding the class\, each participant will learn to make bold changes\, subtle refinements\, and expand their final formula into a small spray vial to take home.

Each class in this series explores the most important perfumes in 20th and 21st perfumery from the perspective of the materials that inform them. \nIn this class\, Dana covers perfumes highlighting spices\, including cinnamon\, clove\, cardamom\, and black and pink pepper. She will explore the material provenance\, aromatic aspects\, and notable perfumes that make use of these spicy notes in various ways. Each session starts with an overview of the material\, after which Dana shares a brief history and the cultural impact of the covered materials\, as well as technical information such as extraction methods and countries of origin. The class then examines the classic\, contemporary\, mass market and niche applications of these materials by looking at (and smelling) important perfumes.

We will then smell musk\, and investigate its role in narratives of power in key Islamic texts and 18th century France. In this hands-on workshop led by Julianne Lee\, you’ll learn how perfumers construct fruity accords from scratch\, then build and take home your own banana accord. \nThe class will begin with sampling a curated selection of perfumes from the IAO Collections that feature this delicious note. Next\, we’ll smell a bevy of molecules that evoke B-A-N-A-N-A in its many forms: sweet\, green\, creamy\, ripe and pungent. \nYou’ll then play with those materials and practice balancing a formula. How naturalistic or candy-runt do you want your banana? This workshop is all about experimentation\, but with rigor: No answers or formulas are given\, but the tools to empower you in your perfume journey. \nWe highly recommend that you have at least one IAO class under your belt\, but eager beginners with self-taught knowledge are also welcome.
