SUMMARY:Perfume-Blending in the Men's Department (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/perfume-blending-in-the-mens-department-in-person-tickets-1996760073130\n\n–\n\n\n\nWhat is a cologne? What is a fougere? What were the molecules commonly found on the men’s side of the perfume counter? Join Minetta Rogers for a perfume course incorporating smelling\, reading\, and scent-blending sessions as you learn about these so-called masculine perfume categories! \nOver three sessions at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume styles traditionally associated with masculinity and the men’s side of the perfume department. Through smelling\, making\, and discussion\, we’ll investigate\, experiment\, and play with these scents. \nCLASS SCHEDULE \nClass 1: Sunday\, November 8\, 2026: Introductions and Cologne \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by exploring the cologne category of fine fragrance. We will start by smelling a selection of fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic cologne formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 2: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026: Fougere \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through the fougere category of fine fragrance while examining it through various literary and olfactory lenses. We’ll discuss the fougere’s place in perfumery as written about by contemporary authors\, perfume critics and writers while smelling through fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections\, supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic fougere formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 3: Sunday\, November 22: Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled and worked with previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we focus on perfume-blending. \nIn a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas building our own “masculine” fine fragrance. Each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one spray vial containing their experimental blend. \n\n\nBetween classes: \nThere is homework between class 1 and 2 that is required. This involves both reading and smelling and will take between 1 and 2 hours. \n  \nTopics covered: \n+ Introduction to the perfume category – smelling and discussion \n+ Introduction to key perfume materials – smelling \n+ Introduction to perfume blending \n  \nTake-Aways: \n+ Kit of smelling materials\, exercise workbook\, and reading materials (included in the cost of registration\, provided at the end of Day 1) \n+ Short formulas and individual scent blends (included in the cost of registration\, made at the end of Days 1\, 2\, and 3) \n\n\nAbout the Instructor \nTrained in architecture and design\, Minetta Rogers is the director of programs at the IAO and has been teaching newcomers to perfumery for almost a decade. Drawing inspiration from the design approaches that she learned through her studies in architecture and in the field\, she brings an approach to education that is rooted in facts\, curiosity supported by rigorous research\, and design strategies. \n\n\nMaterials:Materials are included in the sign-up cost\, and provided by the IAO during class. \nSafety Note \nSome aromatic materials can have side-effects when applied to skin. The information and teaching materials presented in our classes are for educational purposes only. These are not intended for commercial use and do not necessarily reflect commercial best practices or industry safety standards. For more information about commercial best practices and safety\, consult the relevant authorities in your country of residence. \nImportant notes: Please read before signing upYour Eventbrite confirmation contains important instructions for class attendance. Please scroll down on the confirmation email to review. \nAll levels are welcome\, but this session is 18 and up. \nLOCATION \nLocation: We are located in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown neighborhood\, on a pedestrian street. The IAO is wheelchair accessible. \nStreet Address: 932 Chung King Road Los Angeles CA\, 90012 \nTo find us: Chung King Road is a pedestrian-only road that runs parallel to Hill Street\, between Hill St and Yale St. See more information here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit \n\n\nATTENDANCE AND CANCELLATION POLICY FOR IN PERSON CLASSES \nPlease note that you must reserve your space in advance. If you just show up without reserving a spot\, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you. \nWhen we host a class or workshop\, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance\, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans\, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. \n– Cancellation with refund made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored UNLESS materials or formulas have been shared in advance. \n– Refunds requested 1 week or less before the class starts\, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted. \nPlease review our cancellation policy here: https://artandolfaction.com/educationatiao/cancellation-policy/ \nThank you for understanding! \n  \n\n\nImage cologne: Pexels / public domain.

SUMMARY:Advanced Perfume Seminar: Pyrazines (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advanced-perfume-seminar-pyrazines-in-person-tickets-2002991102306?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nPyrazines are crucial in many perfume notes\, mostly in gourmand scents. They can be used to enhance bready\, nutty\, and roasted effects\, and adding notes of coffee\, popcorn\, butter\, rice\, and matcha\, among others. As useful as they are\, they are potent\, and can be hard to work with. \nIn this class\, Spyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of these difficult materials in a theory-oriented exploration of potent\, roasted\, bready pyrazines. \nWe will start class by smelling a selection of pyrazines\, learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of pyrazines\, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance. \nThree hours\, in person. Must have previous experience blending. \n  \nTake-aways: \n\nA better understanding of how to work with pyrazine materials to create perfume notes and effects\nAn overview of perfume materials in the pyrazine category\nSeveral formulas to work from\n\n  \nPhoto credit \nBread: Photo by Vicky Ng on Unsplash

SUMMARY:Tea and Olfaction: Deconstructing Taiwanese Oolong (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1999728302183\n\n–\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. We will then explore together how to strategically augment and modify this baseline formula using specific aromamolecules to match the distinct profiles of the two teas we evaluated. \nThe specialty oolongs featured in this class are generously provided by Tap Twice Tea (https://taptwicetea.com/ ) \n\n\n\nTOPICS COVERED \n\nGuided side-by-side tasting and sensory analysis of two distinct Taiwanese oolongs.\n\n\nPractical techniques to engage both nose and palate during a tea tasting.\n\n\nThe essential building blocks and structure of a baseline tea accord in perfumery.\n\n\nFormulation strategies to adapt a standard tea accord to reflect specific aromatic tea profiles.\n\n  \nKEY TAKEAWAYS \n\nHands-on tools to identify and describe subtle aroma notes in specialty tea.\n\n\nA clear understanding of how our sense of smell directly shapes the experience of taste and flavor.\n\n\nThe foundational skills to adapt a preexisting perfume accord formula to mimic specific\, real-world tea aromatic profiles.\n\n\n\n\nABOUT ANNA MARIANI \nAnna Mariani is a tea specialist\, published writer\, and photographer with over a decade of experience. Through her curated platform\, The Tea Squirrel (https://teasquirrel.com/ )\, she explores the intersection of specialty tea\, culture\, and a sensorial lifestyle. Committed to making high-quality tea accessible\, Anna has immersed herself in the tea cultures of Japan\, South Korea\, and Taiwan\, using tea as a compass for her travels. Alongside her passion for tea\, a lifelong fascination with scent led her to study perfumery at the IAO\, driving her focus on the sensory overlap between tea and experimental fragrance. \nBringing a tea sommelier’s nose and palate and a photographer’s eye to her practice\, Anna celebrates authenticity\, craftsmanship\, and visual storytelling. Her Curated Routes series maps out itineraries that weave exceptional tea rituals with art\, architecture\, and design. By creating elevated sensory experiences\, Anna invites her students to slow down\, practice undivided attention\, and discover how a beautifully crafted cup of tea serves not only as an uplifting ritual for contemplation and meaningful connection\, but also as a powerful practice in olfactory refinement. \n\n\n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES \nRegistration Required: Please note that you must reserve your space in advance. If you just show up without reserving a spot\, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you. Space at this event is limited.
