DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1998934683448?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\nJoin us for an aromatic exploration of Taiwanese oolongs\, bridging the disciplines of specialty tea tasting and experimental scent design. \n\n\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/iao-collections-smelling-session-mens-department-in-person-tickets-1996761451252\n–\n\n\nIn this class\, we will smell historically noteworthy and interesting perfumes historically associated with the men’s aisle of the perfumer counter—sourced from the Institute for Art and Olfaction’s collections. This smelling session will be supplemented by fragrance-related multimedia and in-class discussion. \nParticipants will get to smell a curated set of fine fragrances from the IAO Collections in a group setting. Our discussion will focus on the impressions of these scents as well as their concordance with the theme. \nThis session is a unique opportunity to smell and discuss otherwise inaccessible fine fragrances from deep inside our archives. \nNote to returning students: If you have attended past smelling sessions\, there may be some overlap with previous scents from earlier sessions. \n\n\nAbout IAO Collections \nThe IAO Collections is a reference library and archive of books\, perfumes\, aromatic objects\, and ephemera related to scent\, with an emphasis on 20th century perfume and olfactory art. \nThe objects in the IAO Collectons have been gathered since the Institute for Art and Olfaction held its first public event in 2012. In early 2021\, the collections received a substantial influx of materials bequeathed by Conor McTeague – a friend of the IAO and an irreplaceable advocate for the cultural value of perfume. What were the molecules commonly found on the men’s side of the perfume counter? Join Minetta Rogers for a perfume course incorporating smelling\, reading\, and scent-blending sessions as you learn about these so-called masculine perfume categories! \nOver three sessions at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume styles traditionally associated with masculinity and the men’s side of the perfume department. Through smelling\, making\, and discussion\, we’ll investigate\, experiment\, and play with these scents. \nCLASS SCHEDULE \nClass 1: Sunday\, November 8\, 2026: Introductions and Cologne \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by exploring the cologne category of fine fragrance. We will start by smelling a selection of fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic cologne formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 2: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026: Fougere \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through the fougere category of fine fragrance while examining it through various literary and olfactory lenses. We’ll discuss the fougere’s place in perfumery as written about by contemporary authors\, perfume critics and writers while smelling through fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections\, supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic fougere formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 3: Sunday\, November 22: Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled and worked with previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we focus on perfume-blending. \nIn a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas building our own “masculine” fine fragrance. Each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one spray vial containing their experimental blend. \n\n\nBetween classes: \nThere is homework between class 1 and 2 that is required. Each class in this series explores the most important perfumes in 20th and 21st perfumery from the perspective of the materials that inform them. \nIn this class\, Dana covers perfumes highlighting animalics and musks. She will explore the material provenance\, aromatic aspects\, and notable perfumes that make use of these animalic and musky notes in various ways. Each session starts with an overview of the material\, after which Dana shares a brief history and the cultural impact of the covered materials\, as well as technical information such as extraction methods and countries of origin. The class then examines the classic\, contemporary\, mass market and niche applications of these materials by looking at (and smelling) important perfumes. \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR \nDana El Masri is an Arab-Canadian perfumer & interdisciplinary artist. \nShe was trained at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery\, with a BA in Communication Studies from Concordia University. The owner and creator of Jazmin Saraï\, a perfume brand exploring scent\, sound & culture\, Dana is also an interdisciplinary artist with experience in several cross-modal practices and private label collaborations. She has worked with fellow perfumers\, musicians\, lifestyle brands\, hotels\, art spaces and more. \nDana has been an Art & Olfaction Awards judge for several years and is a published fragrance writer\, winner of a Jasmine Literary Award (UK) and a Perfumed Plume Award (US). Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance.
