SUMMARY:Advanced Perfume Seminar: Sulfur and thiazoles (in person | online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advanced-perfume-seminar-sulfurous-notes-in-person-tickets-2002991428281?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nSulfur and thiazole notes are crucial in certain fruity accords\, but can also be used to add industrial effects and smoky notes—and can enhance the contrast between other olfactory notes. Deployed incorrectly\, however\, some of these notes can lend a urinous\, kitty litter effect. \nSpyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of difficult materials in a theory-oriented class about sulfurous notes and thiazoles. In this seminar\, students will smell materials—including but not limited to several mercaptans— learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of sulfur notes\, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance. \nThree hours\, in person\, with online viewing option. Must have previous experience blending. \nIn person cost: $215.00 | Online cost: $150.00 \nTake-aways: \n\nA better understanding of how to work with sulfurous notes and thiazoles\, and their effects\nAn overview of sulfurous and thiazole perfume materials\nSeveral formulas to work with\n\n– \nPhoto credit – Yellow smoke: Photo by Jonathan Chan on Unsplash

SUMMARY:Tea and Olfaction: Deconstructing Taiwanese Oolong (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1999728302183\n\n–\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. In the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. We will then explore together how to strategically augment and modify this baseline formula using specific aromamolecules to match the distinct profiles of the two teas we evaluated. \nThe specialty oolongs featured in this class are generously provided by Tap Twice Tea (https://taptwicetea.com/ ) \n\n\n\nTOPICS COVERED \n\nGuided side-by-side tasting and sensory analysis of two distinct Taiwanese oolongs.\n\n\nPractical techniques to engage both nose and palate during a tea tasting.\n\n\nThe essential building blocks and structure of a baseline tea accord in perfumery.\n\n\nFormulation strategies to adapt a standard tea accord to reflect specific aromatic tea profiles.\n\n  \nKEY TAKEAWAYS \n\nHands-on tools to identify and describe subtle aroma notes in specialty tea.\n\n\nA clear understanding of how our sense of smell directly shapes the experience of taste and flavor.\n\n\nThe foundational skills to adapt a preexisting perfume accord formula to mimic specific\, real-world tea aromatic profiles.\n\n\n\n\nABOUT ANNA MARIANI \nAnna Mariani is a tea specialist\, published writer\, and photographer with over a decade of experience. Through her curated platform\, The Tea Squirrel (https://teasquirrel.com/ )\, she explores the intersection of specialty tea\, culture\, and a sensorial lifestyle. Committed to making high-quality tea accessible\, Anna has immersed herself in the tea cultures of Japan\, South Korea\, and Taiwan\, using tea as a compass for her travels. Alongside her passion for tea\, a lifelong fascination with scent led her to study perfumery at the IAO\, driving her focus on the sensory overlap between tea and experimental fragrance. \nBringing a tea sommelier’s nose and palate and a photographer’s eye to her practice\, Anna celebrates authenticity\, craftsmanship\, and visual storytelling. Her Curated Routes series maps out itineraries that weave exceptional tea rituals with art\, architecture\, and design. By creating elevated sensory experiences\, Anna invites her students to slow down\, practice undivided attention\, and discover how a beautifully crafted cup of tea serves not only as an uplifting ritual for contemplation and meaningful connection\, but also as a powerful practice in olfactory refinement.

SUMMARY:Unconventional Perfume Blending: Old Books Accord (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/unconventional-perfume-blending-old-books-accord-in-person-tickets-2004046551182?keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\nGather\, ye bibliophiles! Who hasn’t walked into a library with vaulted ceilings and inhaled the cozy\, somewhat musty smell of old books? The nostalgia\, the sweetness\, the mysteries promised by the faded words on yellowed pages… \n\n\n\n\nIn “Unconventional Perfume Blending: Old Books\,” led by instructor Julianne Lee\, we’ll start by enjoying some perfumes from the IAO Collections that feature the note of old books. Next\, we’ll smell a bevy of molecules and natural materials that evoke old books in their many forms: dusty\, sweet\, warm\, woody\, leathery\, inky. We’ll play with those materials and practice balancing a formula. Is your old book a pristine first-edition preserved in a collector’s sleeve\, or a tome unearthed from an elven dwelling? \nWe recommend having at least one IAO class under your belt\, but beginners are completely welcome. By the end of class\, you’ll leave with your own formula for an old book accord in hand\, along with a working understanding of accord-building that you can apply to any other fragrance notes. \nTopics covered: \n+ A breakdown of the scent of old books in the language of aromamolecules \n+ An opportunity to smell perfumes from the IAO Collections that feature old books \n+ Accord-creation: ratios\, proportions\, evaluation \nTake-Aways: \n+ Your own working formula of an old-book accord to take home \n+ Small 5/8 dram vials of your experimental trials \n+ A greater understanding of the nuances of the scent of old books \n+ A foundational method for building accords \n+ Hands-on experience with blending techniques \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Chypre\, Raw to Refined: A Natural Perfume Workshop (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chypre-raw-to-refined-a-natural-perfume-workshop-in-person-tickets-2003632481689?aff=ebdsoporgprofile\n\n–\n\n\nLearn how to think and design like a natural perfumer\, using solely botanical materials. Chypre\, Raw to Refined is a sensory-driven class designed to introduce beginners to perfumery\, and to learn to work with a palette of natural materials. \nCLASS PROGRAM \nPerfumer Jeffrey Paul leads an immersive introduction to natural perfumery\, with a focus on the materials and composition of the chypre fragrance category. Over several hours\, participants will smell and assess beautiful natural aromatics and learn to create classic chypre structures using a palette that includes bright citrus\, glowing labdanum\, earthy oakmoss\, and some unexpected surprises. \nThis class will help train your nose while sharpening your olfactory perception\, providing the tools and knowledge that will allow you to transform a handful of raw aromatics into a traditional\, structured chypre\, based on your own formula developed in class. \nABOUT THE RAW TO REFINED CLASSES \nInspired by the methodology of Jean Carles\, the Raw to the Refined classes are rooted in materiality. Each class begins with a smelling session\, where participants will discover a group of curated materials chosen to support the olfactory topic of the day. Over repeated scent evaluations\, students learn to sharpen their olfactory perception\, a crucial tool in learning to blend perfumery. Students will then be guided through the process of building a blend on top of a foundational chypre accord to create a fragrance that is rooted in a strong concept and specific fragrance family. \nIn these classes\, perfumer Jeffrey Paul will teach you how to transform olfactory instinct into blending based on a foundation of critical evaluation and an appreciation for the complexity of natural materials. The classes aim to provide a foundation of knowledge about material extraction and fragrance families\, and techniques for blind smelling and formulation\, resulting in a clear\, repeatable method for perfume creation. \nSpecific class themes will progress seasonally\, with citrus in the summer\, woods and resins in the fall\, gourmand compositions in the winter\, and florals in the spring. While each class can be taken as a stand-alone experience\, the full series helps build skills\, over time. \nTOPICS COVERED: \n+ Odor evaluation: How to smell and appreciate perfume materials (and reset your senses!) \n+ Guided reflection: Documenting smell experiences and ideating for perfumemaking \n+ Material understanding: Learning about the qualities and extraction of the chosen ingredients \n+ Structural accord construction: Construction of a group accord with an emphasis on formulation techniques \n+ Sensory brief creation: The development of a sensory brief in class\, with the knowledge required to further refine it\, after class \n  \nTAKE-AWAYS: \n+ Your formulated scent in a small spray vial \n+ Your sensory brief \n+ Your individual perfume formula \n+ Blending and materials evaluation strategies \n\n\n  \n\n\nPhoto of moss from Unsplash.

\nTOPICS COVERED: \n+ Odor evaluation: How to smell and appreciate perfume materials (and reset your senses!) \n+ Guided reflection: Documenting smell experiences and ideating for perfumemaking \n+ Material understanding: Learning about the qualities and extraction of the chosen ingredients \n+ Structural accord construction: Construction of a group accord with an emphasis on formulation techniques \n+ Sensory brief creation: The development of a sensory brief in class\, with the knowledge required to further refine it\, after class \n  \nTAKE-AWAYS: \n+ Your formulated scent in a small spray vial \n+ Your sensory brief \n+ Your individual perfume formula \n+ Blending and materials evaluation strategies \n– \n\n\nMoss photo by streetsh on Unsplash
