As a group\, the class will learn the difference between top\, middle and bottom notes\, what’s in a perfume lab\, get a brief introduction to perfume math concepts\, and more. We’ll smell and look at different aromatic materials\, useful labware used in blending scents\, and more! \nParticipants will leave with the basic knowledge they need to start a journey down the rabbit hole of appreciating and even making scent. \nPlease note: This is primarily a lecture-based class\, with a smelling component. There is one group blend exercise and one individual blend exercise\, with participants taking home a small spray vial of their individual scent blend and select reference materials. DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-perfume-the-ides-of-march-in-person-tickets-1986279210588?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nAn ancient Roman plot\, and a caesar cruelly felled before his time… We’re a month behind to “beware the Ides of March\,” but we can still cheerfully interpret them in scent! \nIAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown leads attendees through the basics of perfume composition\, with a very simple goal in mind: To make a new perfume that explores murder most foul\, with a Roman twist. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer on aromatic materials\, as we smell a curated selection of materials rooted in Roman history. The second portion of the class will consist of making: Each participant will be invited to work with the curated materials to create an original composition\, which they will expand on site and decant into a 30ml bottle: A shiny new perfume that interprets an ancient crime (or is simply beautiful) \nImportant notes to manage our expectations:\nThe instructor will be on hand to help you create your own blend\, working with the range of pre-selected materials. If you have a special reques for a material\, please email us before class\, but note that we may not have the material in stock. Note that it is always a possibility that you will not love what you have created! The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials.The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. This offering is designed to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation\, and to welcome those for whom our standard registration fees may not be feasible. \nBlending aromatic molecules together into a composed perfume is not only fun\, but creative\, challenging and – sometimes – kinda relaxing. We can’t promise that you’ll make the next Santal 33\, but we can guarantee that you’ll come away with a healthy respect for the art\, science\, materials\, and skill it takes to make perfume. \nOpen Sessions are the IAO’s longest running program\, and focus on hands-on experience for newcomers to the practice. In a casual\, self-led setting\, you’ll independently tinker with materials from the experimental organ\, select five to work with\, and get to making your first trials! \nWe have everything you need: Aromatic materials (natural\, synthetic\, and accords)\, 5/8 dram vials and pipettes\, and scent strips. The series reflects ongoing inquiries within the library’s holdings into ritual\, embodiment\, desire\, symbolism\, and the unseen forces that shape human experience. This research forms the basis of her upcoming book The Cultures of Perfume (D.A.P.\, Autumn 2026). \nPresenting richly textured anecdotes interwoven with historical research\, these talks will further root the topic in both contemporary and historic olfactory culture through direct experience of aromatic materials and perfumes. DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/iao-library-smelling-session-perfume-box-sets-in-person-tickets-1979564310140?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \n\n\nThe library at the Institute for Art and Olfaction contains half a dozen perfume box sets: collections of compounded scents organized around a theme. Examples include “A World Tour Through Scent”\, a combination book/perfume set that features the work of 12 perfumers of different nationalities; “The Art of Scent\, 1889-2012”\, a catalogue and perfume kit that documented an exhibition on scent curated by Chandler Burr at the Museum of Art and Design in New York; “Nose Music”\, a kit that combines scents with music that was a collaboration between the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, bighouse\, and Dublab; and Visionaire #42 Scent\, the cutting edge fashion periodical that devotes each issue to a special theme\, in this case combining avant garde fashion imagery with 21 experimental perfumes by some of the most innovative perfumers working today. \nParticipants will get to smell as many of the box sets as time allows\, in a group setting. Our discussion will focus on the impressions of the perfumes and their concordance with their accompanying images and texts. This smelling session will be a special opportunity to smell scent box sets from our library that we otherwise do not allow everyday access to. Please note that we will be smelling new scents from the box sets rather than repeating previous scents from earlier sessions.

What do these perfumes smell like and why were they so beloved? \nOver three session at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume style as we smell through key floral aldehydic perfumes\, read about and discuss their cultural meanings\, and attempt to make our own! \nSessions: \nClass 1: Sunday\, February 15: Introductions and smelling through the category \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by smelling historically important aldehydic floral perfume category with fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction perfume library collection. \nClass 2: Sunday\, February 22: No. 5\, revisited \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through one of the defining aldehydic florals while examining it through various critical lenses and historical moments. During this class\, we’ll review its importance through the words of its contemporaries\, current perfume critics and writers\, and even investigate some of its more outrageous off-label uses. \nClass 3: Sunday\, March 1: Experimental Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we’re introduced to the basics of perfume-blending. In a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas paying homage to the aldehydic floral. Finally\, each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one a spray vial containing their experimental blend paying tribute to the aldehydic floral perfume category. \nBetween classes: There is homework between each class that is required. If you have a special reques for a material\, please email us before class\, but note that we may not have the material in stock. Note that it is always a possibility that you will not love what you have created!
