For beginners\, but all levels are welcome. \nFor the first portion of this smelling and blending session\, we will learn about some smells of horses\, fields\, and stables. Scent strips will be handed out by your friendly Institute for Art and Olfaction team\, and we will spend time smelling and discussing our impressions of aromatic materials associated with the season. \nWe will start the second portion of the session by briefly discussing and practicing blending scent. Each student will have the opportunity to blend with aromatic materials from the session’s selected palette. SUMMARY:Make your own perfume! The Ides of March (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-perfume-the-ides-of-march-in-person-tickets-1986279210588?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nAn ancient Roman plot\, and a caesar cruelly felled before his time… We’re a month behind to “beware the Ides of March\,” but we can still cheerfully interpret them in scent! \nIAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown leads attendees through the basics of perfume composition\, with a very simple goal in mind: To make a new perfume that explores murder most foul\, with a Roman twist. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer on aromatic materials\, as we smell a curated selection of materials rooted in Roman history. The second portion of the class will consist of making: Each participant will be invited to work with the curated materials to create an original composition\, which they will expand on site and decant into a 30ml bottle: A shiny new perfume that interprets an ancient crime (or is simply beautiful) \nImportant notes to manage our expectations:\nThe instructor will be on hand to help you create your own blend\, working with the range of pre-selected materials. If you have a special reques for a material\, please email us before class\, but note that we may not have the material in stock. Note that it is always a possibility that you will not love what you have created! However\, you will have the formula and\, most importantly\, the knowledge you need to tweak it\, on your own\, down the line. \nTopics covered:\n+ An overview of perfume creation\, and aromatic materials.\n+ Smelling and discussing a curated selection of perfume materials\, chosen by the instructor.\n+ Writing a formula.\n+ Compounding a perfume oil at 100%\, putting it in solution\, and decanting. \nTake-Aways:\n+ Participants will leave with a knowledge of the basics of perfume blending\n+ Participants will leave with their formula\n+ Participants will leave with a 30ml bottles of their final scent\, at 10% solution.

This class is designed for newcomers and beginners of the craft as an onboarding to working with scent at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nIn this class\, Minetta Rogers will introduce you to the foundational terminology and techniques of perfumery as we guide you through the steps of working with aromatic materials in our labspace. The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials.The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. At the end of class\, you’ll take home 5 aromatic materials\, a final spray vial of your own formulated blend\, and perfume-making knowledge!

This offering is designed to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation\, and to welcome those for whom our standard registration fees may not be feasible. \nBlending aromatic molecules together into a composed perfume is not only fun\, but creative\, challenging and – sometimes – kinda relaxing. We can’t promise that you’ll make the next Santal 33\, but we can guarantee that you’ll come away with a healthy respect for the art\, science\, materials\, and skill it takes to make perfume. \nOpen Sessions are the IAO’s longest running program\, and focus on hands-on experience for newcomers to the practice. In a casual\, self-led setting\, you’ll independently tinker with materials from the experimental organ\, select five to work with\, and get to making your first trials! \nWe have everything you need: Aromatic materials (natural\, synthetic\, and accords)\, 5/8 dram vials and pipettes\, and scent strips. You go home with your formula\, what’s left of your materials and — most importantly — a new awareness of what it takes to make a perfume.
