SUMMARY:Perfume Playbook: Scents from the Crypt (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/perfume-playbook-scents-from-the-crypt-in-person-tickets-1999420120403?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \n\n\nDaniel Krasofski presents an analytical perfume-evaluation class exploring unusual materials and strange scents from the IAO collections. \n\n\n\n\nDaniel Krasofski presents an analytical perfume-evaluation class exploring unusual raw materials and strange scents from the IAO archive\, because sometimes a perfectly nice fragrance needs a little menace. \nWhat makes a scent feel strange\, unsettling\, playful\, or just a little bit haunted? In this Halloween-season edition of Perfume Playbook: Evaluation\, an Analytical Technique\, participants will smell and evaluate an unusual selection of raw materials alongside perfumes from the IAO archive\, including scents connected to The Nightmare Before Christmas\, the Marvel Cinematic Universe\, and Disney. Rather than making a fragrance\, we will focus on close smelling\, descriptive precision\, and the useful art of turning “oh no\, what is that?” into analytical language. Together\, we will consider materials and finished perfumes through vocabulary\, structure\, association\, intensity\, and emotional effect- yes\, there will be graphs; no\, they will not bite. Participants will document their impressions using guided evaluation tools\, building a clearer understanding of how unusual scents communicate character\, atmosphere\, story\, and the occasional whiff of mischief. \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Perfume Blending: Freestyle (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-perfume-blending-freestyle-in-person-tickets-1999422939836?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nJoin us for Introduction to Blending\, a class for beginners to perfumery that is focused on learning how to blend with aromatic materials\, and how to create (and balance) a formula. Perfume-lovers and burgeoning olfactory artists have the opportunity to jump right into making their scent dreams a reality\, with access to the hundreds of aromatic materials in the IAO lab space. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer to the world of aromatic materials: synthetics vs. naturals\, top/middle/base notes\, and dilutions. Participants will be guided through the process of setting up a workstation and how to write a perfume formula\, with proportions and balance in mind. \nThe second portion of the class will be the open exploration of the IAO Organ by all participants. After making individual selections\, we will get to blending! With Julianne Lee guiding the class\, each participant will learn to make bold changes\, subtle refinements\, and expand their final formula into a small spray vial to take home.

SUMMARY:Balancing Act: Grave Matters (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/balancing-act-grave-matters-in-person-tickets-1999421155499?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\nMake one strange scent worthy of the Halloween season\, using a Jean Carles approach to perfume composition\, in person with Daniel Krasofski. \n\n\n\n\nDaniel Krasofski presents Balancing Act: Grave Matters an interpretive class exploring a Jean Carles approach to perfume composition by making one strange scent worthy of the Halloween season. \nThis Halloween-season edition of Balancing Act invites participants to create a perfume around one unusual and evocative idea: dirt – which is more atmospheric than traditionally “pretty.” Following the familiar Balancing Act format\, we will work through a softened\, interpretive approach to the Jean Carles method\, using proportion\, comparison\, and repeated trials to understand how a composition takes shape. Rather than trying to make every spooky scent at once\, a reliable way to summon chaos\, we will focus deeply on one accord and observe how individual materials affect its texture\, balance\, mood\, and recognizability. We will explore how an earthy\, metallic\, mineral\, animalic\, or decaying impression can become compelling\, nuanced\, and perhaps even unexpectedly beautiful. Participants will leave with a structured set of trials and an original fragrance sketch: proof that sometimes the monster under the bed simply needs better proportions.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Perfume Blending: Structured (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-perfume-blending-structured-in-person-tickets-1999424634906?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nJoin us for a structured approach to perfume blending. This class is designed for newcomers and beginners of the craft as an onboarding to working with scent at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nIn this class\, Minetta Rogers will introduce you to the foundational terminology and techniques of perfumery as we guide you through the steps of working with aromatic materials in our labspace. The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials. The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. At the end of class\, you’ll take home 5 aromatic materials\, a final spray vial of your own formulated blend\, and perfume-making knowledge!

SUMMARY:Tea and Olfaction: Deconstructing Taiwanese Oolong (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1998934683448?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\nJoin us for an aromatic exploration of Taiwanese oolongs\, bridging the disciplines of specialty tea tasting and experimental scent design. \n\n\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. We will then explore together how to strategically augment and modify this baseline formula using specific aromamolecules to match the distinct profiles of the two teas we evaluated. \nThe specialty oolongs featured in this class are generously provided by Tap Twice Tea (https://taptwicetea.com/ ) \n

SUMMARY:Perfume-Blending in the Men's Department (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/perfume-blending-in-the-mens-department-in-person-tickets-1996760073130\n\n–\n\n\n\nWhat is a cologne? What is a fougere? What were the molecules commonly found on the men’s side of the perfume counter? Join Minetta Rogers for a perfume course incorporating smelling\, reading\, and scent-blending sessions as you learn about these so-called masculine perfume categories! \nOver three sessions at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume styles traditionally associated with masculinity and the men’s side of the perfume department. Through smelling\, making\, and discussion\, we’ll investigate\, experiment\, and play with these scents. \nCLASS SCHEDULE \nClass 1: Sunday\, November 8\, 2026: Introductions and Cologne \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by exploring the cologne category of fine fragrance. We will start by smelling a selection of fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic cologne formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 2: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026: Fougere \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through the fougere category of fine fragrance while examining it through various literary and olfactory lenses. We’ll discuss the fougere’s place in perfumery as written about by contemporary authors\, perfume critics and writers while smelling through fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections\, supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic fougere formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 3: Sunday\, November 22: Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled and worked with previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we focus on perfume-blending. \nIn a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas building our own “masculine” fine fragrance. Each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one spray vial containing their experimental blend. \n\n\nBetween classes: \nThere is homework between class 1 and 2 that is required. This involves both reading and smelling and will take between 1 and 2 hours. \n  \nTopics covered: \n+ Introduction to the perfume category – smelling and discussion \n+ Introduction to key perfume materials – smelling \n+ Introduction to perfume blending \n  \nTake-Aways: \n+ Kit of smelling materials\, exercise workbook\, and reading materials (included in the cost of registration\, provided at the end of Day 1) \n+ Short formulas and individual scent blends (included in the cost of registration\, made at the end of Days 1\, 2\, and 3) \n\n\nAbout the Instructor \nTrained in architecture and design\, Minetta Rogers is the director of programs at the IAO and has been teaching newcomers to perfumery for almost a decade. Drawing inspiration from the design approaches that she learned through her studies in architecture and in the field\, she brings an approach to education that is rooted in facts\, curiosity supported by rigorous research\, and design strategies. \n\n\nMaterials:Materials are included in the sign-up cost\, and provided by the IAO during class. \nSafety Note \nSome aromatic materials can have side-effects when applied to skin.
