Experimental Applications with Scent: Foundations of Olfactory Art (online)
November 9, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm PST
$40.00–
Working with scent extends beyond the perfume bottle. With a history of creative applications in galleries, concert halls and more, scent can expand a practice, subvert an expectation and serve as a powerful tool for communication. If you’ve been curious about using scent in the context of your art, music or performance practice, this is where you start.
IAO founder Saskia leads a generous exploration of perfumery with an emphasis on creative approaches and olfactory art. Designed for absolute beginners, Saskia will explore important experimental practices with scent in the 20th century. We will cement our discussion in the brass tacks of perfumery (taxonomies, aromatic molecules, production), and expand upon it to explore the ins and outs of applying scent to mediums such as installation, performance, or anything else you can imagine. The whole will be rooted in Saskia’s deep knowledge of applying scent outside the sales counter, and drawing from her real world experience (and mistakes!)
This class is a great first step for anybody looking to work with scent, or simply understand the field of olfactory art. Any questions, of course, will be amply and generously answered.
This class is 2.5 hours long, with a 15 minute break in the middle. It will be recorded and shared with participants for 7 days after class takes place. Prepare to take notes in class, and come with questions!
