As part of the IAO’s celebration of Viscose Journal 07 on Scent, Charles Rosenberg leads a smelling session through critical perfumes and aromatic materials discussed in the journal. Viscose 07 examines scent through a variety of lenses, observing its historical and contemporary role in fashion culture. The issue seeks out scent histories-developed with or by artists and designers-who have embraced and involved smell as a medium of possibility and knowledge production, gesturing to histories of manufacturing, trade, branding, and commerce, but also sexuality, desire, identity, and memory.Participants will get to smell as many of the box sets as time allows, in a group setting. Our discussion will focus on the impressions of the perfumes and their concordance with their accompanying images and texts. This smelling session will be a special opportunity to smell fine fragrances from our library archive that we otherwise do not allow everyday access to.
