SUMMARY:Introduction to Perfume Blending: Freestyle (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-perfume-blending-freestyle-in-person-tickets-1984092126962?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nJoin us for Introduction to Blending\, a class for beginners to perfumery that is focused on learning how to blend with aromatic materials\, and how to create (and balance) a formula. Perfume-lovers and burgeoning olfactory artists have the opportunity to jump right into making their scent dreams a reality\, with access to the hundreds of aromatic materials in the IAO lab space. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer to the world of aromatic materials: synthetics vs. naturals\, top/middle/base notes\, and dilutions. Participants will be guided through the process of setting up a workstation and how to write a perfume formula\, with proportions and balance in mind. \nThe second portion of the class will be the open exploration of the IAO Organ by all participants. After making individual selections\, we will get to blending! With Julianne Lee guiding the class\, each participant will learn to make bold changes\, subtle refinements\, and expand their final formula into a small spray vial to take home.

SUMMARY:IAO Library Smelling Session: Perfume Box Sets (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/iao-library-smelling-session-perfume-box-sets-in-person-tickets-1979564310140?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \n\n\nThe library at the Institute for Art and Olfaction contains half a dozen perfume box sets: collections of compounded scents organized around a theme. Examples include “A World Tour Through Scent”\, a combination book/perfume set that features the work of 12 perfumers of different nationalities; “The Art of Scent\, 1889-2012”\, a catalogue and perfume kit that documented an exhibition on scent curated by Chandler Burr at the Museum of Art and Design in New York; “Nose Music”\, a kit that combines scents with music that was a collaboration between the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, bighouse\, and Dublab; and Visionaire #42 Scent\, the cutting edge fashion periodical that devotes each issue to a special theme\, in this case combining avant garde fashion imagery with 21 experimental perfumes by some of the most innovative perfumers working today. \nParticipants will get to smell as many of the box sets as time allows\, in a group setting. Our discussion will focus on the impressions of the perfumes and their concordance with their accompanying images and texts. This smelling session will be a special opportunity to smell scent box sets from our library that we otherwise do not allow everyday access to. Please note that we will be smelling new scents from the box sets rather than repeating previous scents from earlier sessions.

SUMMARY:Listening to Scent: The Art of Kōdō Experience (session 2\, in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/listening-to-scent-the-art-of-kodo-experience-tickets-1982206251257?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \n\nJoin us for a rare opportunity to experience Kodo\, the Japanese Way of Incense.\n\n\n\nThe Japan–U.S. KODO Initiative presents an immersive program introducing Kodo\, the Japanese Way of Incense\, through a guided workshop\, a Genjiko (Genji Incense) game based on The Tale of Genji\, and an installation by artist Mari Inagaki. Participants will be invited to “listen” to fragrance as a contemplative\, embodied experience. \nThere will be a session at 12pm and one at 3:30pm\, both with limited seating. \nAbout Kodo – The Japanese Way of Incense \nKodo\, or the Way of Incense\, emerged around 500 years ago in Japan\, in the same cultural milieu that gave rise to the tea ceremony and flower arrangement. \nUnder the patronage of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa\, Kodo developed as a refined art form that paired fragrant woods with classical Japanese poetry. Using codified styles known as Rikkoku Gomi (the “six countries and five flavors” of incense)\, practitioners “listen” to incense in structured games called kumiko. \nOne of the most beloved of these is Genjiko (Genji Incense)\, inspired by the 11th-century literary classic The Tale of Genji. Participants identify and record subtle differences in fragrance\, linking each pattern to chapters of the tale. \nIn Kodo\, people say they “listen to incense” rather than “smell it.” The practice emphasizes attention\, observation\, and quiet concentration. For this reason\, Kodo has recently attracted interest in Japan and France as a form of mindfulness rooted in classical culture. \n\n\n\n\nParticipants will experience: \nKODO Installation by Mari Inagaki: An immersive installation featuring projection-mapped photographs by artist Mari Inagaki will precede the workshop. Inspired by the Japanese concept of “listening to fragrance\,” the work brings together visual expression and the spirit of Kodo\, inviting participants to tune their attention to what is subtle\, unseen\, and sensed rather than simply perceived. \nHistory of KODO: An introduction to the historical and cultural background of Kodo\, its relationship to tea ceremony and other traditional arts\, and its development as a classical Japanese practice. \nAbout KODO & How to Enjoy KODO: A guided explanation of key concepts\, tools\, and manners in Kodo\, including how to “listen” to incense with focused\, quiet awareness. \nMonko Experience: A focused “listening to incense” practice in which participants receive the censer\, bring it close\, and quietly attune to the fragrance. This portion of the workshop emphasizes posture\, breathing\, and attentive listening to a single incense offering\, introducing the core contemplative experience at the heart of Kodo. \nGenjiko Experience: A participatory Genjiko session in which guests experience fragrant woods\, record their impressions\, and engage with the literary and playful aspects of this classical incense game.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Fever Dream
DESCRIPTION:RSVP: https://partiful.com/e/x27rElAejr8IWmk7SQef \n– \nFever Dream is an invitation to the surrealist wilds found at the edge of reality: that charged\, trembling place where the old rules loosen their grip\, chaos purrs\, and strangeness feels like home. Curated with Aurora Projects\, our Spring 26 exhibition brings together artists drawing from global surrealist lineages\, from Mexican spirit lore to Dominican dream-worlds and modern myth-making. Featuring works by Roberto Benavidez\, Larissa De Jesús Negrón\, Anindita Dutta\, Diego Moreno\, and Pedro Troncoso. Across cultures and time\, moments of upheaval have often produced revivals of esoteric thinking\, mystical symbolism\, and surrealist creative movements. When systems collapse\, our trust in logic and straight-line thinking crumbles along with them. So we reach for other maps: the subconscious\, the spiritual\, the strange. The places that still feel alive. \n  \nFEVER DREAM: ON RE-WILDING\nOpening Tues Feb 24\, 6-9PM\nFriday Gallery\, ROWDTLA 767 S. Alameda St\, Suite 198\, Los Angeles

DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olfactory-provocation-on-scent-and-currency-online-tickets-1980740579393?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nMaxwell Williams joins us in the first talk in our new Olfactory Provocation series\, which aims to present new\, original\, and provocative ideas in a series of short format talks. \nEvery day\, large quantities of money are illegally moved across borders. The American government is developing devices to decode scent–but its signatures remain intentionally unknown to the public. In this talk\, perfumer Maxwell Williams explores how the government’s nose might impact our personal lives\, while also sharing observations about the scent of currency across borders. Do we love the smell of money primarily as a metaphor for capitalistic “success\,” or is it something deeper? And why do some people seem to smell like cold\, hard cash? \n\n\n  \n\nABOUT OLFACTORY PROVOCATIONS \nThe Olfactory Provocations series from the Institute for Art and Olfaction aims to present new\, original\, and thought-provoking perspectives in a series of short format lectures. In each talk\, you can expect to discover an unexpected idea presented by a thinker and practitioner in the scent community. We offer this series with the belief that being exposed to and discussing new ideas is important\, whether you agree with them or not. With that said\, the views and opinions presented in the Olfactory Provocations series do not reflect the opinions or the IAO or its employees.

The series reflects ongoing inquiries within the library’s holdings into ritual\, embodiment\, desire\, symbolism\, and the unseen forces that shape human experience. This research forms the basis of her upcoming book The Cultures of Perfume (D.A.P.\, Autumn 2026). \nPresenting richly textured anecdotes interwoven with historical research\, these talks will further root the topic in both contemporary and historic olfactory culture through direct experience of aromatic materials and perfumes. The lectures will last approximately 45 minutes and will be followed by ample time for questions\, discussion\, smelling\, and story sharing. \nImage: Detail from Coat of Arms with a Skull\, Albrecht Dürer (1503)

SUMMARY:'Demo Accords': Author Reading and Chat with Pia Long (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demo-accords-author-reading-and-chat-with-pia-long-online-tickets-1761739362859?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nJoin us as we welcome perfumer and writer Pia Long for a discussion about her new book\, DEMO ACCORDS. Attendance for this online event is by donation through Eventbrite. \nDEMO ACCORDS is an interdisciplinary art project combining nine essays\, one short story and ten fully published perfume formulas with original illustrations into a multlayered narratve. A “demo accord” is fragrance industry speak for an open formula shown at trade shows in order to demonstrate a new perfumery ingredient or technique. A demonstration in political context is a protest. \nIn this work perfumer and author Pia Long explores the intersection between her two lifelong loves: writing and perfumery. Part manifesto\, part polemic\, part protest\, part autobiography\, the common thread is radical vulnerability of the perfumer’s art\, practice and personal views. \nInterrogating some fundamental questions about who perfumery belongs to and creating a parallel platform without a brand or a commercial consumer product\, Demo Accords aims to exist for its own sake as a project that uses perfumery as an artistic storytelling device. \nIf the book is a script\, then the formulas are sheet music\, and the actual resulting liquid is therefore the orchestra playing. It is not necessary or compulsory to buy the liquid perfume sample kit to go with the book but it will help everyone hear the music. \nThe book has significant contributions from Nick Gilbert who wrote the scent descriptions and notes lists\, as though for a protest perfume brand. Featuring original illustrations from multiple artists and a full colour cover by a Brighton street artist\, Demo Accords is more than the sum of its parts. \nLearn more about DEMO ACCORDS and order.
