This class is designed for newcomers and beginners of the craft as an onboarding to working with scent at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nIn this class\, Minetta Rogers will introduce you to the foundational terminology and techniques of perfumery as we guide you through the steps of working with aromatic materials in our labspace. The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials.The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. At the end of class\, you’ll take home 5 aromatic materials\, a final spray vial of your own formulated blend\, and perfume-making knowledge!

As a group\, the class will learn the difference between top\, middle and bottom notes\, what’s in a perfume lab\, get a brief introduction to perfume math concepts\, and more. We’ll smell and look at different aromatic materials\, useful labware used in blending scents\, and more! \nParticipants will leave with the basic knowledge they need to start a journey down the rabbit hole of appreciating and even making scent. \nPlease note: This is primarily a lecture-based class\, with a smelling component. There is one group blend exercise and one individual blend exercise\, with participants taking home a small spray vial of their individual scent blend and select reference materials. There are a number of interesting theories surrounding perfume cones with regards to their materials and purpose. But which ones are academically accurate and which ones are just myths? In this upcoming class\, Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith will teach you everything to know about ancient Egyptian perfume cones\, including how to make them. \nThis presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with attendees. \n\n\n\n\nTakeaways and Learning Points: \n\n️Uses: The ancient Egyptians used perfume cones to honor special occasions with their scent\, such as banquets\, funerary rites\, and worshipping the gods\, but also during fishing and fowling\, receiving the gold of honor\, appearing in front of the tree goddess or playing senet.\nSymbolisms: An analysis of the scenes in which perfumes cones appear reveals their deep cultural symbolisms\, which ranges from communicating simple messages\, such that an event taking place is of great significance\, to complex ideas\, such as fighting the chaotic forces of evil through the powerful scents of ma’at.\nDating: Perfume cones can serve as effective dating tools\, as their form and embellishment are characteristic of specific dynasties. Dora will teach you how to date tomb and relief scenes containing perfume cones\, which is an impressive skill to have in classes\, during museum visits\, and on trips to Egypt.\n️Materials: Combining written sources and archaeological finds\, Dora will explain what we know about the raw materials and aromatic ingredients of perfume cones. She will also deconstruct some frequently cited myths\, e.g. that perfume cones were made out of fat.\nExperimental Archaeology: Dora will teach you how to replicate the enigmatic perfume cones. Experimental archaeology is especially important in the research of perfume cones\, as it clarifies a number of previously unanswered questions about their manufacture and purpose.

DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-perfume-the-ides-of-march-in-person-tickets-1986279210588?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nAn ancient Roman plot\, and a caesar cruelly felled before his time… We’re a month behind to “beware the Ides of March\,” but we can still cheerfully interpret them in scent! \nIAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown leads attendees through the basics of perfume composition\, with a very simple goal in mind: To make a new perfume that explores murder most foul\, with a Roman twist. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer on aromatic materials\, as we smell a curated selection of materials rooted in Roman history. The second portion of the class will consist of making: Each participant will be invited to work with the curated materials to create an original composition\, which they will expand on site and decant into a 30ml bottle: A shiny new perfume that interprets an ancient crime (or is simply beautiful) \nImportant notes to manage our expectations:\nThe instructor will be on hand to help you create your own blend\, working with the range of pre-selected materials. If you have a special reques for a material\, please email us before class\, but note that we may not have the material in stock. Note that it is always a possibility that you will not love what you have created!
