SUMMARY:Olfactory Research Notes: Ancient Egyptian Perfume Cones\, with Dora Goldsmith (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olfactory-research-notes-ancient-egyptian-perfume-cones-online-tickets-1983578903898?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \n\n\nHave you ever wondered what those cones are that the ancient Egyptians are often shown wearing on their heads? There are a number of interesting theories surrounding perfume cones with regards to their materials and purpose. But which ones are academically accurate and which ones are just myths? In this upcoming class\, Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith will teach you everything to know about ancient Egyptian perfume cones\, including how to make them. \nThis presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with attendees. \n\n\n\n\nTakeaways and Learning Points: \n\n️Uses: The ancient Egyptians used perfume cones to honor special occasions with their scent\, such as banquets\, funerary rites\, and worshipping the gods\, but also during fishing and fowling\, receiving the gold of honor\, appearing in front of the tree goddess or playing senet.\nSymbolisms: An analysis of the scenes in which perfumes cones appear reveals their deep cultural symbolisms\, which ranges from communicating simple messages\, such that an event taking place is of great significance\, to complex ideas\, such as fighting the chaotic forces of evil through the powerful scents of ma’at.\nDating: Perfume cones can serve as effective dating tools\, as their form and embellishment are characteristic of specific dynasties. Dora will teach you how to date tomb and relief scenes containing perfume cones\, which is an impressive skill to have in classes\, during museum visits\, and on trips to Egypt.\n️Materials: Combining written sources and archaeological finds\, Dora will explain what we know about the raw materials and aromatic ingredients of perfume cones. She will also deconstruct some frequently cited myths\, e.g. that perfume cones were made out of fat.\nExperimental Archaeology: Dora will teach you how to replicate the enigmatic perfume cones. Experimental archaeology is especially important in the research of perfume cones\, as it clarifies a number of previously unanswered questions about their manufacture and purpose.

SUMMARY:IAO Library Smelling Session: Perfume Box Sets (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/iao-library-smelling-session-perfume-box-sets-in-person-tickets-1984730815296 \n– \n\n\nThe library at the Institute for Art and Olfaction contains half a dozen perfume box sets: collections of compounded scents organized around a theme. Examples include “A World Tour Through Scent”\, a combination book/perfume set that features the work of 12 perfumers of different nationalities; “The Art of Scent\, 1889-2012”\, a catalogue and perfume kit that documented an exhibition on scent curated by Chandler Burr at the Museum of Art and Design in New York; “Nose Music”\, a kit that combines scents with music that was a collaboration between the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, bighouse\, and Dublab; and Visionaire #42 Scent\, the cutting edge fashion periodical that devotes each issue to a special theme\, in this case combining avant garde fashion imagery with 21 experimental perfumes by some of the most innovative perfumers working today. \nParticipants will get to smell as many of the box sets as time allows\, in a group setting. Our discussion will focus on the impressions of the perfumes and their concordance with their accompanying images and texts. This smelling session will be a special opportunity to smell scent box sets from our library that we otherwise do not allow everyday access to. Please note that we will be smelling new scents from the box sets rather than repeating previous scents from earlier sessions.

They were smart and just rulers who had an outstanding appreciation for perfumes. However\, there are two queens who were more than just perfume aficionados. Hatshepsut and Cleopatra were visionaries of perfumery\, whose perfume inventions shaped the olfactory history of ancient Egypt and the entire Mediterranean in antiquity. In this\, class Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith will teach you everything to know about ancient Egyptian queens and perfumes. As an added bonus\, she will walk you through the reconstruction of Cleopatra’s famous perfume\, the Mendesian\, and teach you how to make it yourself. \nThis presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with attendees. \n\n\n\n\nTakeaways and Learning Points: \n\nQueens: Which queens stand out in ancient Egyptian history as related to perfumes?\nGoddesses: How did goddesses influence queens in their olfactory practices? Which goddesses did queens try to emulate through scents and why?\nPerfumers: Who were the perfumers of queens and what do we know about them?\nInventions: How did Hatshepsut and Cleopatra reinvent Egyptian perfumery? What were their innovations precisely and what prompted their new visions?\nPolitics: How did Hatshepsut and Cleopatra use scents to establish their social status and strengthen their political career?\nExperimental archaeology: How can we replicate the Mendesian perfume in the modern age? Dora Goldsmith will explain what we know about the Mendesian based on written evidence and show you the perfume-making process step-by-step.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Perfume Blending: Structured
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-perfume-blending-guided-with-minetta-rogers-in-person-tickets-1982854387851?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nJoin us for a structured approacg to perfume blending. This class is designed for newcomers and beginners of the craft as an onboarding to working with scent at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nIn this class\, Minetta Rogers will introduce you to the foundational terminology and techniques of perfumery as we guide you through the steps of working with aromatic materials in our labspace. The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials. The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. At the end of class\, you’ll take home 5 aromatic materials\, a final spray vial of your own formulated blend\, and perfume-making knowledge!

SUMMARY:Jasmine: Perfume Accords (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/jasmine-perfume-accords-online-tickets-1963616955172?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nExplore fragrance categories through specific classes designed by The Institute for Art and Olfaction to help new perfumers gain sensory understanding and technical perfumery skills. \nFor newcomers to the Institute for Art and Olfaction or beginners to the art of blending\, this class is recommended as an entry point into our Perfume Accords series. \nIn the latest of her accords classes\, Ashley leads an investigation into jasmine through two perfume accords: a jasmine absolute and a simplified jasmine DNA perfume accord. Learning how to assemble perfume accords leads to a greater adeptness at blending\, and well-trained noses. Learn how to construct accords as you explore the individual aromatic components of these perfume accords. \nOur accords series helps students of perfumery understand the molecular components of the various facets and types of the most important notes in perfumery. By attending this class\, an emerging perfumer or scent artist will expand their capabilities and training\, gain the materials knowledge to add a new accord to their arsenal\, and leave with a deeper understanding of the artistry and science behind perfumery. \nMaterials Needed/Pre-Class Homework: We will send you a master document containing the materials list and formulation exercises upon signup via the confirmation email from Eventbrite. Please purchase these materials before attending class. The estimated cost of the perfume materials is $86\, not including any labware you may need to purchase. The formulation exercises must be accomplished before the class meets. \nTakeaways: \n– Technical knowledge about the molecular components of the material being reconstructed through the perfume accord\n– A greater familiarity with aromatic components and combinations\n– The capacity to reconstruct the material through its components
