There are a number of interesting theories surrounding perfume cones with regards to their materials and purpose. But which ones are academically accurate and which ones are just myths? In this upcoming class\, Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith will teach you everything to know about ancient Egyptian perfume cones\, including how to make them. \nThis presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with attendees. \n\n\n\n\nTakeaways and Learning Points: \n\n️Uses: The ancient Egyptians used perfume cones to honor special occasions with their scent\, such as banquets\, funerary rites\, and worshipping the gods\, but also during fishing and fowling\, receiving the gold of honor\, appearing in front of the tree goddess or playing senet.\nSymbolisms: An analysis of the scenes in which perfumes cones appear reveals their deep cultural symbolisms\, which ranges from communicating simple messages\, such that an event taking place is of great significance\, to complex ideas\, such as fighting the chaotic forces of evil through the powerful scents of ma’at.\nDating: Perfume cones can serve as effective dating tools\, as their form and embellishment are characteristic of specific dynasties. Dora will teach you how to date tomb and relief scenes containing perfume cones\, which is an impressive skill to have in classes\, during museum visits\, and on trips to Egypt.\n️Materials: Combining written sources and archaeological finds\, Dora will explain what we know about the raw materials and aromatic ingredients of perfume cones. She will also deconstruct some frequently cited myths\, e.g. that perfume cones were made out of fat.\nExperimental Archaeology: Dora will teach you how to replicate the enigmatic perfume cones. Experimental archaeology is especially important in the research of perfume cones\, as it clarifies a number of previously unanswered questions about their manufacture and purpose.

The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/meet-a-nose-andrea-maack-online-tickets-1986038655080?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nEach edition of Meet a Nose takes the form of a one-hour discussion moderated by IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown\, in which extraordinary thinkers\, singular artists\, and distinctive perfumers from around the world share their unique perspectives on what it means to be a sensorial human in the world. \nAndrea Maack is an Icelandic visual artist\, who launched her first perfume as an art piece. “The idea of working with scent came about through a series of exhibitions I always envisioned only making one fragrance titled SMART (Smell Art)\, but after that show\, I was hooked on this process and started working on scented installations full time\,” she explains. \nSoon after that show\, in 2012\, Maack decided to develop a luxury fragrance brand—ANDREA MAACK. “The brand came about when I was invited to host the opening show of a design gallery in downtown Reykjavík and I decided to do an art installation in the form of a “Andrea Maack perfume shop”. \nFor Maack\, the link between visual art and perfumery is a palpable one. “I see scent as a linear thing — it travels along your skin and travels through the air\, which can be reminiscent of strokes traveling across a page.”

This slow\, steady emphasis on deep sensorial study provides an indispensable first step in learning perfumery\, and an opportunity to grow a technical familiarity with perfume materials. \nRegistration includes a materials kit (55 materials\, scent strips)\, and attendees are invited to join live on zoom or catch the class as a video replay: All registrations provide access to the live zoom sessions (72 spots) and 11 week replay access to the recorded sessions. Recording access for all sessions will end on September 14\, 2026. \nThis is Module 1 of a total of three modules. These modules are not consecutive: any student can start at any module (though modules one and two cover more commonly used materials). This module is appropriate for beginners and intermediate perfumers alike. \nClass Experience\nIn each 2-hour online session\, Ashley will lead attendees in smelling and discussing five crucial perfume materials of natural and synthetic origin. How did aromatic materials influence perfumery? How did perfumers draw from the same source to produce such diverse expressions? Each class in this series explores the most important perfumes in 20th and 21st perfumery from the perspective of the materials that inform them. \nIn this class\, Dana covers perfumes highlighting aquatic and marine materials. She will explore the material provenance\, aromatic aspects\, and notable perfumes that make use of these aquatic and marine notes in various ways. In microgravity\, olfaction changes dramatically. Without aggressive ventilation\, air pockets stagnate\, odours linger\, and bodily fluids migrate toward the nasal cavity\, congesting the passages and dulling the sense of smell. The result is sensory monotony\, olfactory fatigue\, and altered perception. Additionally\, astronauts navigate unavoidable\, intimate realities in confined\, shared spaces. These circumstances create persistent atmosphereswith no fresh air or open windows\, and are often marked by avoidance or taboo. \nOlfactory cues bespeak identity and anchor well-being. So how do we create meaningful olfactory experiences in orbitwhen our understanding of smell is profoundly altered\, both physically and perceptually? \nDrawing on astronaut accounts and research from the commercial space industry\, this presentation explores scent as an untapped dimension of spatial design. Smell offers subtle\, temporal\, functional layers that ease discomfort\, support mental health\, and social cohesion in high-performance environments.

Hsu shares his research into how smell reshapes human connections\, and resists racial and colonial capitalist systems. \n\n\n\n\nSmell is a vital\, if underappreciated\, medium through which we inhabit and imagine the world. In his new book Olfactory Worldmaking\, Hsuan L. Hsu traces how olfactory experience communicates across visceral\, material\, and affective registers to offer new ways of relating\, which challenge the extractive logics of racial and colonial capitalism. Blending environmental humanities\, sensory studies\, and critical ethnic studies\, the book highlights how scent animates suppressed histories and marginalized memories. \nHsu theorizes olfaction as a speculative\, reparative practice.
