Learn how to construct accords as you explore the individual aromatic components of these perfume accords. \nOur accords series helps students of perfumery understand the molecular components of the various facets and types of the most important notes in perfumery. By attending this class\, an emerging perfumer or scent artist will expand their capabilities and training\, gain the materials knowledge to add a new accord to their arsenal\, and leave with a deeper understanding of the artistry and science behind perfumery. \nMaterials Needed/Pre-Class Homework: We will send you a master document containing the materials list and formulation exercises upon signup via the confirmation email from Eventbrite. Sculpture\, Architecture\, Theater\, Film and Design were the initial steps on her search for a mode of expression that would support both a dreamer and a pragmatist\, a creative mind fascinated equally by science and by art. Perfumery\, the science of the ineffable\, is where the road finally took her. \nHer first introduction to scent was by way of a gift on her 16th birthday: a bespoke fragrance formulated by renowned perfumer Sarah Horowitz. The study of architecture and design led to travel and work in film art departments\, but ultimately it was to Sarah Horowitz Parfums she returned. From apprentice to Junior Perfumer at SHP\, she was smitten with the field. Dropping everything else\, she immersed herself in study and practice. \nHer education in niche perfumery continued at LA’s Lucky Scent\, and seeking a more formal education in the field\, she moved to France to study at the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery. There\, she distinguished herself with her final brief- winning one of GIP’s coveted awards. After her studies\, she returned to the U.S.\, having accepted a position as a Perfumer’s Assistant at Drom Fragrances International\, one of the world’s top fine fragrance studios. After two years in that position\, she was offered the chance to move back to Los Angeles as consultant for Sarah Horowitz’ new business initiative\, Original Scent. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance.
