SUMMARY:Advanced Perfume Seminar: Pyrazines and Furanones (in person | online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advanced-perfume-seminar-pyrazines-in-person-tickets-2002991102306?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nPyrazines are crucial in many perfume notes\, mostly in gourmand scents. They can be used to enhance bready\, nutty\, and roasted effects\, and adding notes of coffee\, popcorn\, butter\, rice\, and matcha\, among others. Furanones\, for their part\, can add a caramelly\, malted\, fruited and even savory effects. As useful as they are\, these materials are potent\, and can be hard to work with. \nIn this class\, Spyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of these difficult materials in a theory-oriented class. We will start the session by smelling a selection of pyrazines and furanones\, learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of these materials\, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance. \nThree hours\, in person\, with online viewing option. Must have previous experience blending. \n  \nTake-aways: \n\nA better understanding of how to work with pyrazine and furanone materials to create perfume notes and effects\nAn overview of perfume materials in the pyrazine category\nSeveral formulas to work from\n\n  \nPhoto credit \nBread: Photo by Vicky Ng on Unsplash

SUMMARY:Advanced Perfume Seminar: Sulfur and thiazoles (in person | online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advanced-perfume-seminar-sulfurous-notes-in-person-tickets-2002991428281?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nSulfur and thiazole notes are crucial in certain fruity accords\, but can also be used to add industrial effects and smoky notes—and can enhance the contrast between other olfactory notes. Deployed incorrectly\, however\, some of these notes can lend a urinous\, kitty litter effect. \nSpyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of difficult materials in a theory-oriented class about sulfurous notes and thiazoles. In this seminar\, students will smell materials—including but not limited to several mercaptans— learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of sulfur notes\, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance. \nThree hours\, in person\, with online viewing option. SUMMARY:Tea and Olfaction: Deconstructing Taiwanese Oolong (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1999728302183\n\n–\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. We will then explore together how to strategically augment and modify this baseline formula using specific aromamolecules to match the distinct profiles of the two teas we evaluated. \nThe specialty oolongs featured in this class are generously provided by Tap Twice Tea (https://taptwicetea.com/ ) \n\n\n\nTOPICS COVERED \n\nGuided side-by-side tasting and sensory analysis of two distinct Taiwanese oolongs.\n\n\nPractical techniques to engage both nose and palate during a tea tasting.\n\n\nThe essential building blocks and structure of a baseline tea accord in perfumery.\n\n\nFormulation strategies to adapt a standard tea accord to reflect specific aromatic tea profiles.\n\n  \nKEY TAKEAWAYS \n\nHands-on tools to identify and describe subtle aroma notes in specialty tea.\n\n\nA clear understanding of how our sense of smell directly shapes the experience of taste and flavor.\n\n\nThe foundational skills to adapt a preexisting perfume accord formula to mimic specific\, real-world tea aromatic profiles.\n\n\n\n\nABOUT ANNA MARIANI \nAnna Mariani is a tea specialist\, published writer\, and photographer with over a decade of experience. Through her curated platform\, The Tea Squirrel (https://teasquirrel.com/ )\, she explores the intersection of specialty tea\, culture\, and a sensorial lifestyle. Committed to making high-quality tea accessible\, Anna has immersed herself in the tea cultures of Japan\, South Korea\, and Taiwan\, using tea as a compass for her travels. Alongside her passion for tea\, a lifelong fascination with scent led her to study perfumery at the IAO\, driving her focus on the sensory overlap between tea and experimental fragrance. \nBringing a tea sommelier’s nose and palate and a photographer’s eye to her practice\, Anna celebrates authenticity\, craftsmanship\, and visual storytelling. Her Curated Routes series maps out itineraries that weave exceptional tea rituals with art\, architecture\, and design. By creating elevated sensory experiences\, Anna invites her students to slow down\, practice undivided attention\, and discover how a beautifully crafted cup of tea serves not only as an uplifting ritual for contemplation and meaningful connection\, but also as a powerful practice in olfactory refinement. \n\n\n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES \nRegistration Required: Please note that you must reserve your space in advance. If you just show up without reserving a spot\, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you. Space at this event is limited. All levels are welcome\, but this session is 18 and up (or 14+\, with adult supervision). \nMaterials: Handouts and materials are included in the sign-up cost\, and provided by the IAO during class. \nLocation: We are located in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown neighborhood\, on a pedestrian street. \nStreet Address: 932 Chung King Road Los Angeles CA. 90012 \nTo find us: Chung King Road is a pedestrian-only road that runs parallel to Hill Street\, between Hill St and Yale St. See more information here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit \nAttendance and Refund Policy: This is an in person class that will take place at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. SUMMARY:Incense: Perfume Accords (online)
DESCRIPTION:Signup: www.eventbrite.com/e/1990606608953?aff=oddtdtcreator\n\n\n– \nExplore fragrance categories through specific classes designed by The Institute for Art and Olfaction to help new perfumers gain sensory understanding and technical perfumery skills. \nIn the latest of her accords classes\, Ashley leads an investigation into a complex church incense perfume accord. Learning how to assemble perfume accords leads to a greater adeptness at blending\, and well-trained noses. Learn how to construct accords as you explore the individual aromatic components of these perfume accords. \nOur accords series helps students of perfumery understand the molecular components of the various facets and types of the most important notes in perfumery. By attending this class\, an emerging perfumer or scent artist will expand their capabilities and training\, gain the materials knowledge to add a new accord to their arsenal\, and leave with a deeper understanding of the artistry and science behind perfumery. \nMaterials Needed/Pre-Class Homework: We will send you a master document containing the materials list and formulation exercises upon signup via the confirmation email from Eventbrite. Please purchase these materials before attending class. The estimated cost of the perfume materials is between $155\, not including any labware you may need to purchase. The formulation exercises must be accomplished before the class meets. \nTakeaways: \n\nTechnical knowledge about the molecular components of the material being reconstructed through the perfume accord\nA greater familiarity with aromatic components and combinations\nThe capacity to reconstruct the material through its components\n\nImportant notes: \nSafety Note: Some aromatic materials can have side effects when applied to skin. The information and teaching materials presented in our classes are for educational purposes only. These are not intended for commercial use and do not necessarily reflect commercial best practices or industry safety standards. For more information about commercial best practices and safety\, consult the relevant authorities in your country of residence. \nPlease read before signing up: Materials are required for this class\, and must be purchased separately\, before class takes place. The materials list and the teaching formula are sent upon signup\, and can be found at the bottom of the confirmation email from Eventbrite. Because the formula is provided upon signup\, we do not allow cancellations for these classes. We share the recording for each class for 30 days after class takes place\, and will send the recording for review via email after the class is over. \nPlease see our full attendance and refund policy below. \n—- \n\n\nABOUT THE PERFUME ACCORDS CLASS SERIES \nAshley Eden Kessler’s accords classes provide attendees with a thorough study of important perfume accords for perfumers. Her online sessions will focus on helping students understand the molecular components of the various facets and types of the material by exploring and picking apart a formula\, over several trials. Materials must be purchased in advance and students are expected to make the all steps of the perfume accord’s formula before class starts. By attending these classes\, an emerging perfumer or scent artist will expand their capabilities and training\, gain the materials knowledge to add various fragrance components to their arsenal\, and leave with a deeper understanding of the artistry and science behind perfumery. It’s technical blending at its best\, leading to a greater adeptness at blending\, and very well-trained noses. \nStudents must purchase\, dilute\, and blend materials before the start of class. Materials lists and formulas are sent as part of the confirmation email from Eventbrite. \n\n\nABOUT ASHLEY EDEN KESSLER \nA Los Angeles native\, Ashley came to perfumery after forays into other creative disciplines. Sculpture\, Architecture\, Theater\, Film and Design were the initial steps on her search for a mode of expression that would support both a dreamer and a pragmatist\, a creative mind fascinated equally by science and by art. Perfumery\, the science of the ineffable\, is where the road finally took her. \nHer first introduction to scent was by way of a gift on her 16th birthday: a bespoke fragrance formulated by renowned perfumer Sarah Horowitz. The study of architecture and design led to travel and work in film art departments\, but ultimately it was to Sarah Horowitz Parfums she returned. From apprentice to Junior Perfumer at SHP\, she was smitten with the field. Dropping everything else\, she immersed herself in study and practice. \nHer education in niche perfumery continued at LA’s Lucky Scent\, and seeking a more formal education in the field\, she moved to France to study at the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery. There\, she distinguished herself with her final brief- winning one of GIP’s coveted awards. After her studies\, she returned to the U.S.\, having accepted a position as a Perfumer’s Assistant at Drom Fragrances International\, one of the world’s top fine fragrance studios. After two years in that position\, she was offered the chance to move back to Los Angeles as consultant for Sarah Horowitz’ new business initiative\, Original Scent. In 2013\, Ashley joined the Institute for Art and Olfaction as an instructor\, and in 2015 she founded her perfume company\, Sentir Studio. \n\n\nATTENDANCE AND REFUND POLICY \nThis is an online class that will take place on Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent by email approximately 24 hours before the class. SUMMARY:Olfactory Meditation for End Times (online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olfactory-meditation-for-end-times-online-tickets-2001027039742?keep_tld=true\n\n–\n\n\nAir is a teacher of our porosity: we are inextricably webbed with the ills and the joys of every affective and material shift of Earth’s atmosphere. Structures of power and communality swirl as breezes and effluvia. Our lungs expand to receive these complex airs\, allowing us to be recomposed by extant particles\, odorant molecules\, and traces of planetary transference. \nOlfactory Meditation for End Times is an offering that taps into this interconnectivity by offering dedicated space to breathe and smell into our troubled present—thinking and practicing with olfactive engagement as a portal for microcosmic communion. \nThis workshop is presented in conjunction with A toxin threatens\, but it also beckons by agustine zegers at the IAO Gallery. The exhibition will be on view from November 6 – December 18\, 2026. For more information on the exhibition\, visit: https://artandolfaction.com/exhibitions/ \n  \n\n\nABOUT agustine zegers \nagustine zegers is a Chilean olfactory artist and student of molecular biopolitics. Their work invites gaseous becomings that proliferate communion with planetary toxicity. \nThey have scented and exhibited internationally at venues such as the Venice Biennale\, Somerset House\, Kunst Haus Wien\, Gallery 400\, 52 Walker\, Prairie\, Olfactory Art Keller\, and Sharjah Art Foundation. They have lectured at La Escuela\, Centre for Sensory Studies\, Dia:Chelsea\, XE Institute\, and Museo de Arte Contamporáneo\, among others. \nagustine directs Speculative Scent Lab: a para-academic laboratory for experimental fragrance education and ideation. \nLearn more: agustinezegers.com | speculativescent.com \n  \nATTENDANCE AND REFUND POLICY \nThis is an online class that will take place on Zoom.
