What were the molecules commonly found on the men’s side of the perfume counter? Join Minetta Rogers for a perfume course incorporating smelling\, reading\, and scent-blending sessions as you learn about these so-called masculine perfume categories! \nOver three sessions at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume styles traditionally associated with masculinity and the men’s side of the perfume department. Through smelling\, making\, and discussion\, we’ll investigate\, experiment\, and play with these scents. \nCLASS SCHEDULE \nClass 1: Sunday\, November 8\, 2026: Introductions and Cologne \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by exploring the cologne category of fine fragrance. We will start by smelling a selection of fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic cologne formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 2: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026: Fougere \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through the fougere category of fine fragrance while examining it through various literary and olfactory lenses. We’ll discuss the fougere’s place in perfumery as written about by contemporary authors\, perfume critics and writers while smelling through fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections\, supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic fougere formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 3: Sunday\, November 22: Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled and worked with previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we focus on perfume-blending. \nIn a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas building our own “masculine” fine fragrance. Each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one spray vial containing their experimental blend. \n\n\nBetween classes: \nThere is homework between class 1 and 2 that is required. This involves both reading and smelling and will take between 1 and 2 hours. \n  \nTopics covered: \n+ Introduction to the perfume category – smelling and discussion \n+ Introduction to key perfume materials – smelling \n+ Introduction to perfume blending \n  \nTake-Aways:  \n+ Kit of smelling materials\, exercise workbook\, and reading materials (included in the cost of registration\, provided at the end of Day 1) \n+ Short formulas and individual scent blends (included in the cost of registration\, made at the end of Days 1\, 2\, and 3) \n\n\nAbout the Instructor \nTrained in architecture and design\, Minetta Rogers is the director of programs at the IAO and has been teaching newcomers to perfumery for almost a decade. Each session starts with an overview of the material\, after which Dana shares a brief history and the cultural impact of the covered materials\, as well as technical information such as extraction methods and countries of origin. The class then examines the classic\, contemporary\, mass market and niche applications of these materials by looking at (and smelling) important perfumes. \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR \nDana El Masri is an Arab-Canadian perfumer & interdisciplinary artist. \nShe was trained at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery\, with a BA in Communication Studies from Concordia University. The owner and creator of Jazmin Saraï\, a perfume brand exploring scent\, sound & culture\, Dana is also an interdisciplinary artist with experience in several cross-modal practices and private label collaborations. She has worked with fellow perfumers\, musicians\, lifestyle brands\, hotels\, art spaces and more. \nDana has been an Art & Olfaction Awards judge for several years and is a published fragrance writer\, winner of a Jasmine Literary Award (UK) and a Perfumed Plume Award (US). Materials lists and formulas are sent as part of the confirmation email from Eventbrite. \n\n\nABOUT ASHLEY EDEN KESSLER \nA Los Angeles native\, Ashley came to perfumery after forays into other creative disciplines. Sculpture\, Architecture\, Theater\, Film and Design were the initial steps on her search for a mode of expression that would support both a dreamer and a pragmatist\, a creative mind fascinated equally by science and by art. Perfumery\, the science of the ineffable\, is where the road finally took her. \nHer first introduction to scent was by way of a gift on her 16th birthday: a bespoke fragrance formulated by renowned perfumer Sarah Horowitz. The study of architecture and design led to travel and work in film art departments\, but ultimately it was to Sarah Horowitz Parfums she returned. From apprentice to Junior Perfumer at SHP\, she was smitten with the field. Dropping everything else\, she immersed herself in study and practice. \nHer education in niche perfumery continued at LA’s Lucky Scent\, and seeking a more formal education in the field\, she moved to France to study at the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery. There\, she distinguished herself with her final brief- winning one of GIP’s coveted awards. After her studies\, she returned to the U.S.\, having accepted a position as a Perfumer’s Assistant at Drom Fragrances International\, one of the world’s top fine fragrance studios. After two years in that position\, she was offered the chance to move back to Los Angeles as consultant for Sarah Horowitz’ new business initiative\, Original Scent. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. Learning how to assemble perfume accords leads to a greater adeptness at blending\, and well-trained noses. Learn how to construct accords as you explore the individual aromatic components of these perfume accords. \nOur accords series helps students of perfumery understand the molecular components of the various facets and types of the most important notes in perfumery. By attending this class\, an emerging perfumer or scent artist will expand their capabilities and training\, gain the materials knowledge to add a new accord to their arsenal\, and leave with a deeper understanding of the artistry and science behind perfumery. \nMaterials Needed/Pre-Class Homework: We will send you a master document containing the materials list and formulation exercises upon signup via the confirmation email from Eventbrite. Materials lists and formulas are sent as part of the confirmation email from Eventbrite. \n\n\nABOUT ASHLEY EDEN KESSLER \nA Los Angeles native\, Ashley came to perfumery after forays into other creative disciplines. Sculpture\, Architecture\, Theater\, Film and Design were the initial steps on her search for a mode of expression that would support both a dreamer and a pragmatist\, a creative mind fascinated equally by science and by art. Perfumery\, the science of the ineffable\, is where the road finally took her. \nHer first introduction to scent was by way of a gift on her 16th birthday: a bespoke fragrance formulated by renowned perfumer Sarah Horowitz. The study of architecture and design led to travel and work in film art departments\, but ultimately it was to Sarah Horowitz Parfums she returned. From apprentice to Junior Perfumer at SHP\, she was smitten with the field. Dropping everything else\, she immersed herself in study and practice. \nHer education in niche perfumery continued at LA’s Lucky Scent\, and seeking a more formal education in the field\, she moved to France to study at the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery. There\, she distinguished herself with her final brief- winning one of GIP’s coveted awards. After her studies\, she returned to the U.S.\, having accepted a position as a Perfumer’s Assistant at Drom Fragrances International\, one of the world’s top fine fragrance studios. After two years in that position\, she was offered the chance to move back to Los Angeles as consultant for Sarah Horowitz’ new business initiative\, Original Scent. In 2013\, Ashley joined the Institute for Art and Olfaction as an instructor\, and in 2015 she founded her perfume company\, Sentir Studio. \n\n\nATTENDANCE AND REFUND POLICY \nThis is an online class that will take place on Zoom.
