Meet a Nose: Spyros Drosopoulos, Baruti (online)

We are excited to welcome Spyros Drosopoulos, perfumer and founder of Baruti, in the latest edition of our online conversation series, Meet a Nose. Each edition of Meet a Nose takes the form of a one-hour discussion moderated by IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown, in which extraordinary thinkers, singular artists, and distinctive perfumers from around the world share their unique perspectives on what it means to be a sensorial human in the world.
Dr. Spyros Drosopoulos is the founder and perfumer of BARUTI Perfumes. Born in the Netherlands, raised in Greece, and educated in Germany, Spyros has had a lifelong fascination with scent and smells. While studying psychology, he discovered the allure of perfume as a tool of seduction. His academic journey continued with a Ph.D. in Sleep and Memory Consolidation, completed Magna Cum Laude. During that time, he encountered the world of niche perfumery. This discovery shifted his focus from the effects of fragrances to the intricacies of their creation. In 2009, he attended a workshop in perfume-making, igniting what would become his second career. Motivated by the creative possibilities of perfume creation, he left academia to devote all his energy into studying the art of perfumery. For him, being a perfumer activates his creativity and satisfies his passion for knowledge and science.
Fast forward to the here and now, BARUTI is now sold in more than 80 boutiques world- wide, in Europe, North and Middle America, Middle East and Asia.
Besides his work for Baruti, he creates for other brands and artists, performs live with scent, explored the intersection of AI and perfumery, and teaches the popular Perfume Intensive course at the Institute for Art and Olfaction (IAO) in LA.
Being self-taught has been a blessing in disguise for this former academic as unhindered by conventions and driven by a deep curiosity and rigorous research, he was free to develop his skill and escape the beaten path. His passion lies in reconstructing everyday scents, whether inspired by flowers, objects, or anything that catches his imagination. Spyros’s expertise spans niche and commercial perfumery, as well as experimental and artistic scent projects. Unlike many in the industry, he believes in demystifying the world of perfume. He enjoys sharing his knowledge in a typical scientific no-nonsense manner, with those eager to learn about the materials and techniques behind fragrance creation.
