As long as humans have been worrying, they have relied on little moments of superstition to help alleviate potential disaster. Good luck charms vary from culture to culture: some people believe lady bugs bring luck, other people rely on bats. A four-leafed clover, a rabbit’s foot, a horseshoe, a falling star and even bird poop have all – at some time – been perceived as harbingers of fortune. And then, there’s perfume. Many companies have released luck-themed scents, some with historical basis, many others relying on marketing, and belief.
For this session, Saskia Wilson-Brown draws on research into olfaction and magic to guide a smelling and blending session that is all about good forthune.
In the first half of the session, we will learn about and discuss aromatic materials that have been associated with fortune in various cultures. Then, we will spend the rest of the session formulating out own good luck charms, using the palette of perfume materials selected for the class.
Everyone goes home with a small spray vial of their lucky composition, and a small pouch of scented beads. One for the car, one for the pocket, and good fortune for all!
