Olfactory Provocation: On Scent and Currency (online)

–
Maxwell Williams joins us in the first talk in our new Olfactory Provocation series, which aims to present new, original, and provocative ideas in a series of short format talks.
Every day, large quantities of money are illegally moved across borders. The American government is developing devices to decode scent–but its signatures remain intentionally unknown to the public. In this talk, perfumer Maxwell Williams explores how the government’s nose might impact our personal lives, while also sharing observations about the scent of currency across borders. Do we love the smell of money primarily as a metaphor for capitalistic “success,” or is it something deeper? And why do some people seem to smell like cold, hard cash?
ABOUT OLFACTORY PROVOCATIONS
The Olfactory Provocations series from the Institute for Art and Olfaction aims to present new, original, and thought-provoking perspectives in a series of short format lectures. In each talk, you can expect to discover an unexpected idea presented by a thinker and practitioner in the scent community. We offer this series with the belief that being exposed to and discussing new ideas is important, whether you agree with them or not. With that said, the views and opinions presented in the Olfactory Provocations series do not reflect the opinions or the IAO or its employees.
