In this online talk, Nuri McBride examines oud not merely as a beloved fragrance but as an aromatic artefact existing within overlapping cultural sensoria. We will look at oud from a Sensory Anthropological and linguistic perspective, focusing on the social impact of olfaction in three sensory-linguistical case studies.
Through that lens, we will briefly explore the following:
Humanity’s participation in the ecological history and development of oud
The role oud plays in communities beyond commercial perfumery
Oud’s position as a cultural artefact and identity signifier
Oud’s economic impact as a luxury trade good
This talk is part of the ongoing Scent and Society series, curated in 2023 by Nuri McBride.
