We all understand that scent and memory are tied. Who has not smelled a hand soap or someone’s perfume and thought, “That reminds me of….”

This class will look at research from NIH, Harvard Medical, and other trusted resources to discuss the intrinsic enmeshment of scent and memory in the human brain and how early humans used their sense of smell for navigating, determining safety, and more. Current research points to the sense of smell being linked to brain fitness and how it is being used for treatments in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, and Dementia.

We will look at current treatments for anosmia to create new neural pathways in the brain through scent repetition and association, as well as how we can leverage some of these understandings to create more scent-centered geriatric care and new scent-focused methods for retraining habits and addictions.

This class will be presented online with ample time for questions and discussion. No materials are needed for this class.
