SUMMARY:'The Cultures of Perfume' at Pioneer Works\, Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:More info: https://pioneerworks.org/programs/second-sundays-november-2026 \n– \nThis is an external event\, and is not being produced by the IAO.  \nJoin Saskia Wilson-Brown and D.A.P. for the launch of ‘The Cultures of Perfume: Scents That Shaped History’\, with a smell-enlivened talk about scent in historic narratives of seduction\, during Pioneer Works’ Second Sunday! \n“Man’s sexual impulse is to a large extent activated by his sense of smell\,” wrote Charles Waldemar in 1958. Indeed\, scent has been used across time and across cultures to seduce\, beguile\, and occasionally trick people into bed. In celebration of the release of her new book The Cultures of Perfume (D.A.P\, 2026)\, Saskia Wilson-Brown\, Founder and Executive Director of the The Institute for Art and Olfaction\, will demonstrate perfumery’s impact on humanity’s favorite pastime: lovemaking. With richly textured anecdotes interwoven with historical research\, this interactive talk on olfactory culture features direct interaction with aromatic materials and perfumes listed below. A book-signing will follow. \nMaterials: Civet\, honey\, jasmine\, leather \nPerfumes: Ma Bête\, Eris Parfums (Antoine Lie\, 2016); Bee\, Zoologist (Cristiano Canali\, 2019); Jaz\, Jazmin Saraï (Dana El Masri\, 2022); Riders\, Sarah Baker Perfumes (Ashley Eden Kessler\, 2020) \nSince 2013\, Pioneer Works has hosted Second Sundays\, a free monthly open house. Highlighting our programs\, artists-in-residence\, and Red Hook community members\, Second Sundays features open studios\, exhibitions\, workshops\, live music\, and food—with programming across all three floors and in our garden.

SUMMARY:Make your own perfume: Cultures of Trade (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-perfume-cultures-of-trade-in-person-tickets-2003194042305?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \n\n\n\n\n\nSaskia Wilson-Brown shares research for her recent book—The Cultures of Perfume: Scents That Shaped History—with an emphasis on materials historically used to express culture in discrete areas of activity. \nThis two and a half hour session will focus on historic trade routes\, exploring four materials that have been traded and valued across the ancient world. The class starts with a smelling session\, focusing on sandalwood\, nutmeg and clove\, saffron and vetiver\, with other aromatic notes included as appropriate. After smelling the materials and discussing their historic use\, the class will engage in a blending exercise\, making a perfume as a group while we explore how to formulate. Finally\, each attendee will make their own composition using the materials from class\, leaving with a 15ml spray vial. \nTake-aways\n– Information about the historical use of perfume materials in trade\n– Sensorial experience of topical materials\, including sandalwood notes\, nutmeg and clove notes\, saffron notes\, and vetiver notes\, as well as appropriate other materials.\n– Learning how to formulate and compose an experimental perfume\n– A 15ml spray bottle of your custom perfume \n\n\n\nImage credit: The Trustees of the British Museum.
