SUMMARY:'The Cultures of Perfume' at Pioneer Works\, Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:More info: https://pioneerworks.org/programs/second-sundays-november-2026 \n– \nThis is an external event\, and is not being produced by the IAO.  \nJoin Saskia Wilson-Brown and D.A.P. for the launch of ‘The Cultures of Perfume: Scents That Shaped History’\, with a smell-enlivened talk about scent in historic narratives of seduction\, during Pioneer Works’ Second Sunday! \n“Man’s sexual impulse is to a large extent activated by his sense of smell\,” wrote Charles Waldemar in 1958. Indeed\, scent has been used across time and across cultures to seduce\, beguile\, and occasionally trick people into bed. In celebration of the release of her new book The Cultures of Perfume (D.A.P\, 2026)\, Saskia Wilson-Brown\, Founder and Executive Director of the The Institute for Art and Olfaction\, will demonstrate perfumery’s impact on humanity’s favorite pastime: lovemaking. With richly textured anecdotes interwoven with historical research\, this interactive talk on olfactory culture features direct interaction with aromatic materials and perfumes listed below. A book-signing will follow. \nMaterials: Civet\, honey\, jasmine\, leather \nPerfumes: Ma Bête\, Eris Parfums (Antoine Lie\, 2016); Bee\, Zoologist (Cristiano Canali\, 2019); Jaz\, Jazmin Saraï (Dana El Masri\, 2022); Riders\, Sarah Baker Perfumes (Ashley Eden Kessler\, 2020) \nSince 2013\, Pioneer Works has hosted Second Sundays\, a free monthly open house. Highlighting our programs\, artists-in-residence\, and Red Hook community members\, Second Sundays features open studios\, exhibitions\, workshops\, live music\, and food—with programming across all three floors and in our garden.

SUMMARY:'The Cultures of Perfume' x Fashion Fiction\, Ace Hotel Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:More info coming soon. \n– \nThis is an external event\, and is not being produced by the IAO.  \nJoin Fashion Fiction\, Ace Hotel Brooklyn and Artbook | D.A.P. in partnership with Serviette for an evening celebrating The Cultures of Perfume: Scents that Shaped History by Saskia Wilson-Brown\, founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nWilson-Brown’s illustrated field guide explores our fascination with perfume\, and what the art of olfaction can teach us about ourselves and our common humanity. Weaving together folk knowledge\, anecdotes\, and archival research to tell the histories of 36 scent notes—ranging from jasmine to civet to Iso E Super—The Cultures of Perfume goes beyond both natural history and industry insiders to argue for scent as an art form in and of itself\, and one that’s accessible to everyone. \nFor this special Fashion Fiction edition\, invited participants will each respond to a section or material from the book through a short reading. Wilson-Brown will introduce each one with scent-enlivened demonstrations. \nFeaturing Taylore Scarabelli\, Marlowe Granados\, Becca Rothfeld\, Thessaly La Force and more to be announced\, with Saskia Wilson-Brown. \nAlongside the readings\, Serviette will create a scent installation inspired by the book. Guests will be invited to smell a selection of fragrance materials\, with each material connected back to both the book and Serviette’s fragrances. A selection of specialty cocktails inspired by the evening will also be available from the Ace Hotel Brooklyn bar. \nCopies of The Cultures of Perfume and a selection of Serviette fragrances will be available to purchase at the event on a first-come\, first-served basis\, while supplies last. Presented by Fashion Fiction\, Ace Hotel Brooklyn\, and Artbook | D.A.P. in partnership with Serviette. \n
