For beginners\, but all levels welcome. \nFor the first portion of this smelling and blending session\, we will learn about some smells in the historical palettes of love. Scent strips will be handed out by your friendly Institute for Art and Olfaction team\, and we will spend time smelling and discussing our impressions of aromatic materials associated with the season. \nWe will start the second portion of the session by briefly discussing and practicing blending scent. Each student will have the opportunity to blend with aromatic materials from the session’s selected palette. We will spend the rest of the session experimenting with our own short formulas. \nEach attendee goes home with a small trial of their aromatic blend. \nTopics covered: \n– introduction to aromatic materials and scent evaluation \n– introduction to blending and composing scent \n– introduction to expanding formulas \nTake-Aways: A spray vial of chosen scent blend \n\n\n\n\nSafety Note: Some aromatic materials can have side effects when applied to skin. What do these perfumes smell like and why were they so beloved? \nOver three session at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume style as we smell through key floral aldehydic perfumes\, read about and discuss their cultural meanings\, and attempt to make our own! \nSessions: \nClass 1: Sunday\, February 15: Introductions and smelling through the category \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by smelling historically important aldehydic floral perfume category with fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction perfume library collection. \nClass 2: Sunday\, February 22: No. 5\, revisited \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through one of the defining aldehydic florals while examining it through various critical lenses and historical moments. During this class\, we’ll review its importance through the words of its contemporaries\, current perfume critics and writers\, and even investigate some of its more outrageous off-label uses. \nClass 3: Sunday\, March 1: Experimental Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we’re introduced to the basics of perfume-blending. In a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas paying homage to the aldehydic floral. Finally\, each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one a spray vial containing their experimental blend paying tribute to the aldehydic floral perfume category. \nBetween classes: There is homework between each class that is required. This involves both reading and smelling and will take between 1 and 2 hours. \nTopics covered: \n+ Introduction to the perfume category – smelling and discussion\n+ Introduction to key perfume materials – smelling\n+ Introduction to perfume blending \nTake-Aways:\n+ Reading + smelling materials (included in the cost of registration)\n+ Short formulas and spray vial of scent blend

Curated with Aurora Projects\, our Spring 26 exhibition brings together artists drawing from global surrealist lineages\, from Mexican spirit lore to Dominican dream-worlds and modern myth-making. Featuring works by Roberto Benavidez\, Larissa De Jesús Negrón\, Anindita Dutta\, Diego Moreno\, and Pedro Troncoso. Across cultures and time\, moments of upheaval have often produced revivals of esoteric thinking\, mystical symbolism\, and surrealist creative movements.
