This class is designed for newcomers and beginners of the craft as an onboarding to working with scent at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. \nIn this class\, Minetta Rogers will introduce you to the foundational terminology and techniques of perfumery as we guide you through the steps of working with aromatic materials in our labspace. The class will begin with a guided smelling session that introduces you to the world of aromatic materials. You’ll smell a selection of materials from our organ that shine light on the difference between naturals\, synthetics\, and bases; top\, middle\, and base notes; and different dilutions and odor intensities. As a group\, you’ll take part in several group blending exercises to demonstrate proper technique in writing perfume formula iterations and blending scent trials. The second portion of the class is dedicated to individual blending time\, with a selection of 5 materials chosen and decanted into blending vials by you. \nMinetta Rogers is here to assist with material selection\, formula tweaking\, and basic perfume arithmetic as you experiment\, explore\, and learn. At the end of class\, you’ll take home 5 aromatic materials\, a final spray vial of your own formulated blend\, and perfume-making knowledge!

SUMMARY:IAO Collections Smelling Session: Men's Department (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/iao-collections-smelling-session-mens-department-in-person-tickets-1996761451252\n–\n\n\nIn this class\, we will smell historically noteworthy and interesting perfumes historically associated with the men’s aisle of the perfumer counter—sourced from the Institute for Art and Olfaction’s collections. This smelling session will be supplemented by fragrance-related multimedia and in-class discussion. \nParticipants will get to smell a curated set of fine fragrances from the IAO Collections in a group setting. Our discussion will focus on the impressions of these scents as well as their concordance with the theme. \nThis session is a unique opportunity to smell and discuss otherwise inaccessible fine fragrances from deep inside our archives. \nNote to returning students: If you have attended past smelling sessions\, there may be some overlap with previous scents from earlier sessions. \n\n\nAbout IAO Collections \nThe IAO Collections is a reference library and archive of books\, perfumes\, aromatic objects\, and ephemera related to scent\, with an emphasis on 20th century perfume and olfactory art. \nThe objects in the IAO Collectons have been gathered since the Institute for Art and Olfaction held its first public event in 2012. In early 2021\, the collections received a substantial influx of materials bequeathed by Conor McTeague – a friend of the IAO and an irreplaceable advocate for the cultural value of perfume. It is in his honor that we embarked upon the project of cataloging his donation of over a thousand perfumes\, and incorporating them into our existing collection. \nLearn more: https://artandolfaction.com/projects/iaocollections/ \n\n\nAbout the Instructor \nTrained in architecture and design\, Minetta Rogers is the director of programs at the IAO and has been teaching newcomers to perfumery for almost a decade. Drawing inspiration from the design approaches that she learned through her studies in architecture and in the field\, she brings an approach to education that is rooted in facts\, curiosity supported by rigorous research\, and design strategies. \n\n\nImportant notes: \nPlease read before signing up \nYour Eventbrite confirmation contains important instructions for class attendance. Please scroll down on the confirmation email to review. \nAll levels are welcome\, but this session is 18 and up. \nLOCATION \nLocation: We are located in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown neighborhood\, on a pedestrian street. The IAO is wheelchair accessible. \nStreet Address: 932 Chung King Road Los Angeles CA\, 90012 \nTo find us: Chung King Road is a pedestrian-only road that runs parallel to Hill Street\, between Hill St and Yale St. See more information here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit \nATTENDANCE AND CANCELLATION POLICY FOR IN PERSON CLASSES \nPlease note that you must reserve your space in advance. If you just show up without reserving a spot\, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you. \nWhen we host a class or workshop\, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance\, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans\, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. \n– Cancellation with refund made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored UNLESS materials or formulas have been shared in advance. \n– Refunds requested 1 week or less before the class starts\, on the day of the classor after the class has happened will not be granted. \nPlease review our cancellation policy here: https://artandolfaction.com/educationatiao/cancellation-policy/ \nThank you for understanding! \n\n\nImage credits: Pexels\, Institute for Art and Olfaction

What were the molecules commonly found on the men’s side of the perfume counter? Join Minetta Rogers for a perfume course incorporating smelling\, reading\, and scent-blending sessions as you learn about these so-called masculine perfume categories! \nOver three sessions at the Institute for Art and Olfaction\, the course will provide an overview of the perfume styles traditionally associated with masculinity and the men’s side of the perfume department. Through smelling\, making\, and discussion\, we’ll investigate\, experiment\, and play with these scents. \nCLASS SCHEDULE \nClass 1: Sunday\, November 8\, 2026: Introductions and Cologne \nIn this class\, we will review the syllabus and dive in by exploring the cologne category of fine fragrance. We will start by smelling a selection of fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic cologne formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 2: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026: Fougere \nIn this class\, we’ll smell through the fougere category of fine fragrance while examining it through various literary and olfactory lenses. We’ll discuss the fougere’s place in perfumery as written about by contemporary authors\, perfume critics and writers while smelling through fine fragrances shared from the Institute for Art and Olfaction collections\, supplemented by aromatic materials from our perfume organ. \nFollowing that\, we will create our own short classic fougere formulas\, then blend them to take home in a splash vial. \nClass 3: Sunday\, November 22: Perfume Design – Blending Challenge \nIn this class\, we’ll return to some of the key aromatic materials we’ve smelled and worked with previously\, now in a more hands-on manner as we focus on perfume-blending. \nIn a playful but educational setting\, we’ll experiment with and compose individual short formulas building our own “masculine” fine fragrance. Each participant will expand their favorite formula to take one spray vial containing their experimental blend. \n\n\nBetween classes: \nThere is homework between class 1 and 2 that is required. This involves both reading and smelling and will take between 1 and 2 hours. \n  \nTopics covered: \n+ Introduction to the perfume category – smelling and discussion \n+ Introduction to key perfume materials – smelling \n+ Introduction to perfume blending \n  \nTake-Aways: \n+ Kit of smelling materials\, exercise workbook\, and reading materials (included in the cost of registration\, provided at the end of Day 1) \n+ Short formulas and individual scent blends (included in the cost of registration\, made at the end of Days 1\, 2\, and 3) \n\n\nAbout the Instructor \nTrained in architecture and design\, Minetta Rogers is the director of programs at the IAO and has been teaching newcomers to perfumery for almost a decade.
