The series reflects ongoing inquiries within the library’s holdings into ritual\, embodiment\, desire\, symbolism\, and the unseen forces that shape human experience. This research forms the basis of her upcoming book The Cultures of Perfume (D.A.P.\, Autumn 2026). \nPresenting richly textured anecdotes interwoven with historical research\, these talks will further root the topic in both contemporary and historic olfactory culture through direct experience of aromatic materials and perfumes. DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-perfume-the-ides-of-march-in-person-tickets-1986279210588?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nAn ancient Roman plot\, and a caesar cruelly felled before his time… We’re a month behind to “beware the Ides of March\,” but we can still cheerfully interpret them in scent! \nIAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown leads attendees through the basics of perfume composition\, with a very simple goal in mind: To make a new perfume that explores murder most foul\, with a Roman twist. \nThe class will begin with a quick primer on aromatic materials\, as we smell a curated selection of materials rooted in Roman history. The second portion of the class will consist of making: Each participant will be invited to work with the curated materials to create an original composition\, which they will expand on site and decant into a 30ml bottle: A shiny new perfume that interprets an ancient crime (or is simply beautiful) \nImportant notes to manage our expectations:\nThe instructor will be on hand to help you create your own blend\, working with the range of pre-selected materials. If you have a special reques for a material\, please email us before class\, but note that we may not have the material in stock. Note that it is always a possibility that you will not love what you have created! However\, you will have the formula and\, most importantly\, the knowledge you need to tweak it\, on your own\, down the line. \nTopics covered:\n+ An overview of perfume creation\, and aromatic materials.\n+ Smelling and discussing a curated selection of perfume materials\, chosen by the instructor.\n+ Writing a formula.\n+ Compounding a perfume oil at 100%\, putting it in solution\, and decanting. \nTake-Aways:\n+ Participants will leave with a knowledge of the basics of perfume blending\n+ Participants will leave with their formula\n+ Participants will leave with a 30ml bottles of their final scent\, at 10% solution.

DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/meet-a-nose-andrea-maack-online-tickets-1986038655080?aff=oddtdtcreator \n– \nEach edition of Meet a Nose takes the form of a one-hour discussion moderated by IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown\, in which extraordinary thinkers\, singular artists\, and distinctive perfumers from around the world share their unique perspectives on what it means to be a sensorial human in the world. \nAndrea Maack is an Icelandic visual artist\, who launched her first perfume as an art piece. “The idea of working with scent came about through a series of exhibitions I always envisioned only making one fragrance titled SMART (Smell Art)\, but after that show\, I was hooked on this process and started working on scented installations full time\,” she explains. \nSoon after that show\, in 2012\, Maack decided to develop a luxury fragrance brand—ANDREA MAACK. “The brand came about when I was invited to host the opening show of a design gallery in downtown Reykjavík and I decided to do an art installation in the form of a “Andrea Maack perfume shop”. \nFor Maack\, the link between visual art and perfumery is a palpable one. “I see scent as a linear thing — it travels along your skin and travels through the air\, which can be reminiscent of strokes traveling across a page.”
