This is an external event, and is not being produced by the IAO.

Join Fashion Fiction, Ace Hotel Brooklyn and Artbook | D.A.P. in partnership with Serviette for an evening celebrating The Cultures of Perfume: Scents that Shaped History by Saskia Wilson-Brown, founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Art and Olfaction.

Wilson-Brown’s illustrated field guide explores our fascination with perfume, and what the art of olfaction can teach us about ourselves and our common humanity. Weaving together folk knowledge, anecdotes, and archival research to tell the histories of 36 scent notes—ranging from jasmine to civet to Iso E Super—The Cultures of Perfume goes beyond both natural history and industry insiders to argue for scent as an art form in and of itself, and one that’s accessible to everyone.

For this special Fashion Fiction edition, invited participants will each respond to a section or material from the book through a short reading. Wilson-Brown will introduce each one with scent-enlivened demonstrations.

Featuring Taylore Scarabelli, Marlowe Granados, Becca Rothfeld, Thessaly La Force and more to be announced, with Saskia Wilson-Brown.

Alongside the readings, Serviette will create a scent installation inspired by the book. Guests will be invited to smell a selection of fragrance materials, with each material connected back to both the book and Serviette’s fragrances. A selection of specialty cocktails inspired by the evening will also be available from the Ace Hotel Brooklyn bar.

Copies of The Cultures of Perfume and a selection of Serviette fragrances will be available to purchase at the event on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Presented by Fashion Fiction, Ace Hotel Brooklyn, and Artbook | D.A.P. in partnership with Serviette.
