Academic Dr. Ally Louks provides a lecture series exploring the power of smell and smell’s intersections with power, foregrounding its impact on identity.

This is an online, lecture-based class, with time for Q&A from the audience during each class. Each session will be a 45-50 minute lecture followed by 15-30 minutes of Q+A. Class meets April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24, May 1, May 8, and May 15, 2025 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM PDT.

Thursday, April 3 – Introduction: In the first lecture, Dr. Ally Louks introduces the interdisciplinary field of smell studies, provides an overview of smell’s myths and marvels, and sets out the landscape of the course.

Thursday, April 10 – Smell and Class: In the second lecture, Dr. Louks explores how language of smell reveals class hierarchies and hostilities.

Thursday, April 17 – Smell and Animality: In the third lecture, Dr. Louks explores how our sense of smell is mediated by our understanding of animal olfaction.

Thursday, April 24 – Smell and Race: In the fourth lecture, Dr. Louks focuses on how smell, as both faculty and feature, is fundamental to the construction of race.

Thursday, May 1 – Smell and Gender: In the fifth lecture, Dr. Louks discusses the language and logics of smell in the context of gender.

Thursday, May 8 – Smell and Sexuality: In the sixth lecture, Dr. Louks considers the intersections between smell and sexuality, exploring concepts of prejudice, perversity and queerness.

Thursday, May 15 – Smell and Disability: In the final lecture, Dr. Louks explores the connections between smell and disability, touching on smell disorders, neurodivergence, and care work.
