Talisman: Meditations
by Persephenie
March 16 to April 7, 2024

The Institute for Art and Olfaction welcomes Los Angeles-based artist and perfumer Persephenie, in her first solo show at the IAO Gallery.

Talisman: Meditations is an exhibition that consists of paintings, a video, and a sculptural altar that includes perfume, incense, and talismans made from herbs.

Persephenie’s work presents a personal outlet for the artist to engage in self-observation. Processing and documenting interpersonal relationship dynamics as well as the relationship between the artist and larger world, the work on view addresses the pain and complexity of connection, autonomy, and self-awareness while engaging in a deeper hope for mental wellbeing in the midst of complicated circumstances.

Persephenie creates work that draws on the magical/cultural objects known as talismans to incorporate tangible objects, olfactive objects, and visual imagery. The imaginative work on show is drawn from the real life experiences of the artist, and in this way serves as a journal of self reflection that incorporates meaningful symbolism, and the human quest to thrive.

Opening: Saturday March 16, 5-7pm
On View: March 16 to April 7, 2024

As part of the exhibition, Persephenie will present two workshops

ABOUT PERSEPHENIE

Persephenie is a multivalent creator with interests in art, design, and the olfactory. She opened her aromatic studio in Los Angeles in 2004, and has been teaching classes around scent practices since 2006. While her expertise is in perfumery and incense that make use of natural and rare materials, she simultaneously supports an arts practice, focusing her efforts in painting and craft. With personal shifting priorities and existing in complex times, sharing a different aspect of her work and offering experiential encounters feels intimately important and relevant.
