OLFACTORY ART SYMPOSIUM
The Institute for Art and Olfaction + Smell It!
Friday July 9 + Saturday July 10, 2021
Renowned and emerging artists, academics and thinkers will present their new work and ideas in an online symposium dedicated to new practices in Olfactory Art.
For this event, the Institute for Art and Olfaction partnered with Smell it! The Fragrance of Art, a joint project comprising 10 exhibitions on Olfactory Art that were on view in May, June and July 2021 in Bremen, Germany. A selection of these artists showcases their practices and their pieces for Smell it!, joined by gallerists and scholars in two zoom sessions on Fri, July 9 and Sat, July 10, 2021.

ABOUT SMELL IT!
In Smell It! the diverse aspects of the olfactory sense as a means of human exploration of the world are negotiated and represented in olfactory art. The result is ten individual projects that are generated through individual approaches in a reciprocal process between art, science and society.
The artistic questions will be devoted to the general fascination with the socially underrepresented sense of smell and its direct connection to emotions and memories. The use of the sense of smell as a manipulative element of a consumer society, and its connection to social power strategies will be another focus of artistic questions.
This is a joint project on smell in contemporary art with 8 institutions based in Bremen, Germany: GAK Society for Current Art, Gerhard-Marcks-Haus, kek Children’s Museum, Künstlerhaus Bremen, Kunsthalle Bremen, Kunstverein Bremerhaven, Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, Städtische Galerie Bremen, Weserburg Museum for Modern Art, Center for Artist Publications
