Triforium Fridays
October 19, 26, November 2
The Triforium, Fletcher-Bowron Square, Los Angeles
ABOUT
Claire Evans and Jona Bechtold are the duo behind some of LA’s coolest output: Yacht, 5 Every Day, and a host of other events, books, and, and, and…
Now, they take on the Triforium. The Triforium – a six story-tall, sixty-ton public artwork in the heart of downtown Los Angeles – was designed by the artist Joseph Young in 1974 as a monumental musical instrument, one designed to synchronize sound and light into a new “polyphonoptic” art form. With 1,494 colored glass cubes, a visionary computer system, and a custom glass bell carillon, it was unlike anything else in the world—and far ahead of its time.
Like many things ahead of their time, The Triforium, has fallen into disrepair. Despite the very best of intentions, periodic efforts to refurbish the sculpture (one led, in fact, by IAO board member Adolfo Nodal) have failed. Team Yacht wants to change that!
For three Fridays this fall, the Triforium lives again through a series of activations and performances involving music, light and scent. It’s a auditory-visual-olfactory extravaganza!
Curated/Produced by: Claire Evans, Jona Bechtold, Tom Carroll
Scents: Maxwell Williams teams up with headlining artists to compose and disseminate custom aromas. More information to come.

TEAM
Team Yacht: Claire Evans + Jona Bechtold
YACHT started as Jona’s solo venture in 2002, only to double in size when Claire joined in 2008. Since 2010 YACHT’s live performances have included our very best friend Bobby Birdman as a player, collaborator, and irreplaceable addition to the enterprise. In all its incarnations, YACHT has been incredibly fortunate to tour around the world both alone and with bands that may well have introduced you to us. Some of our favorite tourmates have been: LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Chip, Architecture in Helsinki, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend, The Postal Service, and M83. We’ve made remixes for Snoop Dogg, Kings of Leon, Phoenix, Neon Indian, Stereolab, RATATAT, Classixx, and many more. We love making these. We’re usually up to something, and it’s not always music. We have a line of sunglasses. We built an app, called 5 Every Day, that tells you five interesting things to do in Los Angeles every day. Claire is a writer and science fiction editor, and her work is all over the internet. Start Googling and you’ll find lots more seemingly unrelated projects and ephemera. It’s all related.
Maxwell Williams
Maxwell Williams, an LA-based culture writer, contributes to The New York Times, W Magazine, Bloomberg, Condé Nast Traveler, High Times, and Dazed. He also occasionally DJs. Working with the IAO and Mediamatic, Maxwell launched the world’s first radio show devoted to scent in July, 2018. This first iteration – called Scentless Apprentice – lasted one month and was broadcast in partnership with dublab. Maxwell is a member of IAO’s board of directors.
