SUMMARY:Tracing Perfume: Animalics/Musks (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tracing-perfume-animalicsmusks-in-person-tickets-1994984319804\n\n–\n\n\nDana El Masri explores the history of fine fragrance through a series of classes that cover the genealogy of scent. How did aromatic materials influence perfumery? How did perfumers draw from the same source to produce such diverse expressions? Each class in this series explores the most important perfumes in 20th and 21st perfumery from the perspective of the materials that inform them. \nIn this class\, Dana covers perfumes highlighting animalics and musks. She will explore the material provenance\, aromatic aspects\, and notable perfumes that make use of these animalic and musky notes in various ways. Then\, as a group\, the class will smell and discuss a series of notes and perfumes that elucidate the category. \n\n\nTOPICS COVERED \n\nHistory and cultural impact of perfume materials\nTechnical information about perfume materials\nOverview of these materials in classic\, contemporary\, mass market\, and niche perfumes\n\nMaterials: There are no materials required for this class. The information and teaching materials presented in our classes are for educational purposes only. For more information about commercial best practices and safety\, consult the relevant authorities in your country of residence. \nPlease read our cancellation policy (lower down on this page) before signing up! \n\n\nABOUT THE TRACING PERFUMES SERIES \nDana El Masri’s perfume history and culture classes explore the genealogy of perfumery\, and present a chance to explore perfume history through direct experience: Smelling the trajectory of a category in fine fragrance. Each session starts with an overview of the material\, after which Dana shares a brief history and the cultural impact of the covered materials\, as well as technical information such as extraction methods and countries of origin. The class then examines the classic\, contemporary\, mass market and niche applications of these materials by looking at (and smelling) important perfumes. \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR \nDana El Masri is an Arab-Canadian perfumer & interdisciplinary artist. \nShe was trained at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery\, with a BA in Communication Studies from Concordia University. The owner and creator of Jazmin Saraï\, a perfume brand exploring scent\, sound & culture\, Dana is also an interdisciplinary artist with experience in several cross-modal practices and private label collaborations. She has worked with fellow perfumers\, musicians\, lifestyle brands\, hotels\, art spaces and more. \nDana has been an Art & Olfaction Awards judge for several years and is a published fragrance writer\, winner of a Jasmine Literary Award (UK) and a Perfumed Plume Award (US). Her most recent interdisciplinary work has revolved around multi-sensory movement and synesthetic practice in a piece called Σmotion. \nHer primary focus is on the importance of scent in social interaction\, multicultural representation in perfumery\, and public education on the world of scent. \n\n\nIMPORTANT INFORMATION \nLocation: The IAO is wheelchair accessible. Note there is a small 1″ lip at the threshold of the space. See how to find us and where to park here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit \nCancellation Policy \nWhen we host a class or workshop\, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance\, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans\, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. With all that said\, here’s our refund policy for this class: \n– Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you\, but will 100% refund your spot. \n– Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class\, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted. \n– Cancellations or refund requests must be made by email. \nNote also that event tickets are non-transferable. \n  \n\n\nThe Institute for Art and Olfaction

SUMMARY:Advanced Perfume Seminar: Pyrazines and Furanones (in person | online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advanced-perfume-seminar-pyrazines-in-person-tickets-2002991102306?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nPyrazines are crucial in many perfume notes\, mostly in gourmand scents. They can be used to enhance bready\, nutty\, and roasted effects\, and adding notes of coffee\, popcorn\, butter\, rice\, and matcha\, among others. Furanones\, for their part\, can add a caramelly\, malted\, fruited and even savory effects. As useful as they are\, these materials are potent\, and can be hard to work with. \nIn this class\, Spyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of these difficult materials in a theory-oriented class. We will start the session by smelling a selection of pyrazines and furanones\, learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of these materials\, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance. \nThree hours\, in person\, with online viewing option. Must have previous experience blending. \nIn person cost: $215.00 | Online cost: $150.00 \nTake-aways: \n\nA better understanding of how to work with pyrazine and furanone materials to create perfume notes and effects\nAn overview of perfume materials in the pyrazine category\nSeveral formulas to work from\n\n  \nPhoto credit \nBread: Photo by Vicky Ng on Unsplash \nThe Institute for Art and Olfaction

SUMMARY:Advanced Perfume Seminar: Sulfur and thiazoles (in person | online)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advanced-perfume-seminar-sulfurous-notes-in-person-tickets-2002991428281?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true \n– \nSulfur and thiazole notes are crucial in certain fruity accords\, but can also be used to add industrial effects and smoky notes—and can enhance the contrast between other olfactory notes. Deployed incorrectly\, however\, some of these notes can lend a urinous\, kitty litter effect. \nSpyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of difficult materials in a theory-oriented class about sulfurous notes and thiazoles. In this seminar\, students will smell materials—including but not limited to several mercaptans— learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of sulfur notes\, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance. \nThree hours\, in person\, with online viewing option. SUMMARY:Tea and Olfaction: Deconstructing Taiwanese Oolong (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tea-and-olfaction-deconstructing-taiwanese-oolong-in-person-tickets-1999728302183\n\n–\n\n\nTea specialist Anna Mariani will lead this workshop with a side-by-side analysis of two contrasting Taiwanese oolong teas. Through specific exercises designed to reveal nuanced aroma notes\, we will explore the connection between how we smell and how we taste. Because our sense of smell accounts for up to 80–90% of what we experience as flavor\, the complex profile of tea serves as an ideal blueprint for building a perfume accord. \nBy translating our notes into a perfumer’s vocabulary\, we will deconstruct the olfactory architecture of each infusion—from the dry leaf to the aroma lingering in the empty cup. \nIn the second half of the class\, drawing on these insights and under the guidance of IAO instructor Julianne Lee \, we will work with a baseline tea accord to learn the structural foundations of tea in fragrance. We will then explore together how to strategically augment and modify this baseline formula using specific aromamolecules to match the distinct profiles of the two teas we evaluated. \nThe specialty oolongs featured in this class are generously provided by Tap Twice Tea (https://taptwicetea.com/ ) \n\n\n\nTOPICS COVERED \n\nGuided side-by-side tasting and sensory analysis of two distinct Taiwanese oolongs.\n\n\nPractical techniques to engage both nose and palate during a tea tasting.\n\n\nThe essential building blocks and structure of a baseline tea accord in perfumery.\n\n\nFormulation strategies to adapt a standard tea accord to reflect specific aromatic tea profiles.\n\n  \nKEY TAKEAWAYS \n\nHands-on tools to identify and describe subtle aroma notes in specialty tea.\n\n\nA clear understanding of how our sense of smell directly shapes the experience of taste and flavor.\n\n\nThe foundational skills to adapt a preexisting perfume accord formula to mimic specific\, real-world tea aromatic profiles.\n\n\n\n\nABOUT ANNA MARIANI \nAnna Mariani is a tea specialist\, published writer\, and photographer with over a decade of experience. Through her curated platform\, The Tea Squirrel (https://teasquirrel.com/ )\, she explores the intersection of specialty tea\, culture\, and a sensorial lifestyle. Committed to making high-quality tea accessible\, Anna has immersed herself in the tea cultures of Japan\, South Korea\, and Taiwan\, using tea as a compass for her travels. Alongside her passion for tea\, a lifelong fascination with scent led her to study perfumery at the IAO\, driving her focus on the sensory overlap between tea and experimental fragrance. \nBringing a tea sommelier’s nose and palate and a photographer’s eye to her practice\, Anna celebrates authenticity\, craftsmanship\, and visual storytelling. Her Curated Routes series maps out itineraries that weave exceptional tea rituals with art\, architecture\, and design. By creating elevated sensory experiences\, Anna invites her students to slow down\, practice undivided attention\, and discover how a beautifully crafted cup of tea serves not only as an uplifting ritual for contemplation and meaningful connection\, but also as a powerful practice in olfactory refinement. \n\n\n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES \nRegistration Required: Please note that you must reserve your space in advance. If you just show up without reserving a spot\, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you. Space at this event is limited. All levels are welcome\, but this session is 18 and up (or 14+\, with adult supervision). \nMaterials: Handouts and materials are included in the sign-up cost\, and provided by the IAO during class. \nLocation: We are located in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown neighborhood\, on a pedestrian street. \nStreet Address: 932 Chung King Road Los Angeles CA. 90012 \nTo find us: Chung King Road is a pedestrian-only road that runs parallel to Hill Street\, between Hill St and Yale St. See more information here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit \nAttendance and Refund Policy: This is an in person class that will take place at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. Cancellation with refund made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored unless materials or formulas have been shared in advance. Refunds requested 1 week or less before the class starts\, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted.
