The Institute for Art and Olfaction welcomes Los Angeles-based artist and perfumer Persephenie, in her first solo show at the IAO Gallery.
Talisman: Meditations is an exhibition that consists of paintings, a video, and a sculptural altar that includes perfume, incense, and talismans made from herbs.
Persephenie’s work presents a personal outlet for the artist to engage in self-observation. Processing and documenting interpersonal relationship dynamics as well as the relationship between the artist and larger world, the work on view addresses the pain and complexity of connection, autonomy, and self-awareness while engaging in a deeper hope for mental well-being in the midst of complicated circumstances.
Persephenie creates work that draws on the magical/cultural objects known as talismans to incorporate tangible objects, olfactive objects, and visual imagery. The imaginative work on show is drawn from the real life experiences of the artist, and in this way serves as a journal of self reflection that incorporates meaningful symbolism, and the human quest to thrive.
